A storm is considered Category 5 \u2014 the strongest \u2014 at 157 miles per hour.<\/p>\n<p>In an eerie coincidence, Sunday is exactly 16 years to the day that Hurricane Katrina made landfall in Louisiana, eventually killing 1,833 people and leaving millions homeless. <\/p>\n<p>The coastal communities of Jean Lafitte, Barataria and Lafitte were bracing for disaster from Ida, as forecasts suggested flooding could overwhelm its 7 1\/2-foot levee, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nola.com\/news\/environment\/article_442c80dc-080a-11ec-a4ed-0731d9ec88d7.html\">Nola.com reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnything over 7 1\/2, 8 foot would be complete and utter Bello<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019d be a historic storm in the worst possible way for the Town of Jean Lafitte, Crown Point, Lower Lafitte and Barataria, all of south Jefferson outside the levee protection.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The storm had grown in strength so quickly that New Orleans officials said that there was no time to order an evacuation of its 390,000 residents.<\/p>\n<p>Mayor LaToya Cantrell urged residents to leave voluntarily, warning that the \u201cstorm, in no way, will be weakening.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you are voluntarily evacuating, now is the time to leave,\u201d Cantrell said shortly before midnight on Saturday. \u201cIf you are riding this out, you need to be prepared to hunker down.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image Lafayette to the Mississippi state line.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs meteorologists at the National Weather Service Slidell office, we can\u2019t bear to see this on satellite,\u201d the National Weather monster storm barreling toward the Gulf Coast. <\/p>\n<p>Gov.
