Perry was at Noel Holmes Hospital in Lucea, Jamaica when he passed earlier today (August 29). A cause of death has not yet been revealed. He was 85 years old. Andrew Holness, Jamaica\u2019s prime minister, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-offer-url=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AndrewHolnessJM\/status\/1431994929841049606\" class=\"external-link\" data-event-click='{\"element\":\"ExternalLink\",\"outgoingURL\":\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AndrewHolnessJM\/status\/1431994929841049606\"}' href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AndrewHolnessJM\/status\/1431994929841049606\">posted<\/a> a tribute to the iconic musician on <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Twitter<\/a> after the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> of Perry\u2019s death began to circulate. \u201cMy deep condolences to the family, friends, and fans of legendary record producer and singer, Rainford Hugh Perry OD, affectionately known as \u2018Lee Scratch\u2018 Perry.\u201d Holness wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Perry, along with his band the Upsetters, helped spread the music of Jamaica around the world, producing records by groups\u00a0like the Congos and Bob Marley &amp; the Wailers, and serving as an influence on acts including the Clash and the Beastie Boys. Perry was born in Kendal, Jamaica in 1936. In the \u201950s, Perry began working with Clement Coxsone Dodd, selling records and later working at Dodd\u2019s recording studio, Studio One. Using this experience, he started his own label, Upsetter.<\/p>\n<p>He\u00a0released his innovative first single, \u201cPeople Funny Boy\u201d through the label, which highlighted his distinctive production technique. His studio experimentations\u2014which included early uses of sampling and remixing\u2014helped lead to the creation of the dub genre, which he solidified at Black Ark Studios\u2014a new space he built in his backyard.
