Soon, we\u2019ll live in a world where our cargo makes its way from coast to coast on an autonomous ship. At least that\u2019s Yara International\u2019s plan. The Norway-based company\u2019s crewless electric cargo ship, the Yara Birkeland<\/a>, will set sail on its maiden voyage before the year\u2019s end.<\/p>\n

The vessel was originally slated to set sail in 2020, but the trip<\/a> was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic<\/a>. And while it isn\u2019t the first crewless ship\u2014that honor goes to a Finnish ship that launched back in 2018\u2014it is the world\u2019s first crewless fully electric container ship. The Birkeland will be controlled remotely by three separate control centers.<\/p>\n
