It\u2019s a tactic men use to keep a steady hookup without the adult responsibility of having a partner. And it leaves women who want to be exclusive feeling like it\u2019s \u201ctoo crazy\u201d to ask for just that. When confronted, a situationship-loving guy will simply respond that he\u2019s \u201cjust not ready for a relationship.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Eventually, one person catches feelings and faces heartbreak when the other doesn\u2019t want anything more than just some casual sex.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@theaudreypeters?lang=en\">Audrey Peters<\/a>, 24, knows a thing or two about situationships after being in one for years in college. She wanted a relationship, but he only wanted to hang out after hours.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-tiktok wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-tiktok\"\/>\u201cI was like, \u2018Why won\u2019t he make it official? Why is he embarrassed to talk about it?\u2019 \u201d said Peters, who lives in Manhattan. \u201cI just couldn\u2019t compute it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was a classic case of mixed signals: telling her he loved her when he was drunk, but avoiding her around their friends when he was sober. But instead of setting boundaries, the talking stage usually comprises casual Snapchats and \u201cYou up?\u201d texts. <\/p>\n<p>During this period, men may shower you with compliments, seem like they want to get to know you and act as if you\u2019re their girlfriend \u2014 except you\u2019re not. <\/p>\n<p>The recipient of this attention becomes confused: \u201cDoes he want a relationship or is this just another situationship?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It most certainly is a situationship \u2014 and eventually, after much stringing along, it will become apparent that he doesn\u2019t want anything more than to share a bed with you on Saturday nights. <\/p>\n<p>To Peters, the talking stage is a bunch of bull. <\/p>\n<p>He either wants to sleep with you or he wants to date you, she said, and you\u2019ll know it. He won\u2019t ask you to come over at 2 a.m. on a Friday, she said. Instead, he\u2019ll say, \u201cHey, I made a reservation and I\u2019m going to pick you up at 7:30.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dubbed \u201cThe older sister of the Internet,\u201d TikTok personality <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@tinx?lang=en\">Tinx<\/a> created \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/COvRj1PnXbD\/?hl=en\">box theory,<\/a>\u201d a way of understanding how men categorize women, which also debunks the significance of the talking stage.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-instagram wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-instagram\"\/>Men, she says, put us in boxes: dating, hooking up and nothing. Tinx says we can\u2019t change categories, because the men we\u2019re seeing have already placed us in a box, locked us in and tossed away the key. <\/p>\n<p>The classic situationship conflict?
