Ideally, your commute takes the same amount of time every day, but traffic and construction have other things in mind. We\u2019ll show you how to make a clever home screen shortcut to easily see and hear how long it will take on your Android phone or tablet.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s easy enough to open up Google Maps and check to see how long the commute will be for that day. You could even ask a smart speaker for some help. We\u2019ll be using Google Assistant to create an even easier\u00a0routine that can be added to your home screen.<\/p>\n

You\u2019ll be able to simply tap the shortcut, and no matter where you are, Google Assistant will tell you how many minutes it will take to get to work. You can also use this same technique to hear how long it will take to get home from wherever you are.<\/p>\n

First, open the Google Home app<\/a> on your\u00a0Android device. Since we\u2019re creating a home screen shortcut, this won\u2019t work on an iPhone or iPad. Select \u201cRoutines\u201d at the top of the main screen.<\/p>\n

Next, tap the floating \u201c+\u201d button to start creating a new routine.<\/p>\n

The first step is to decide how the routine will be triggered. Tap \u201cAdd Starter.\u201d<\/p>\n

Next, select \u201cVoice Command\u201d as the starter.<\/p>\n

Enter any command that you might say to hear how long it will take to get to work. We won\u2019t be using the voice command to launch the routine, but it\u2019s nice to have the option.<\/p>\n

Now, we can select \u201cAdd Action.\u201d<\/p>\n

Scroll down and tap \u201cTry Adding Your Own.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"select<\/p>\n

We can enter any command that you would normally say to Google Assistant. In this case, you should type \u201chow many minutes away is [name of work location].\u201d If you\u2019ve added your work location to Google Maps, you can simply put \u201chow many minutes away is Work.\u201d Tap \u201cDone\u201d to proceed.<\/p>\n

Lastly, tap \u201cSave\u201d to finalize the routine.<\/p>\n

To create the home screen shortcut, first, select it from the list of routines.<\/p>\n

Now, you can tap the phone icon in the top-right corner to create the shortcut.<\/p>\n

A pop-up will app<\/a>ear with a shortcut icon. You can tap and hold the icon to place it manually on your home screen, or you can tap \u201cAdd Automatically\u201d to have it placed for you.<\/p>\n

The shortcut will now be on your home screen. Simply tap it to launch the routine, and Google Assistant will tell you how many minutes it will take to get to work.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s it! Google will automatically know where you are, so even if you\u2019re not home, it will always tell you how long it will take from your current location.<\/p>\n
