Co-written by DaCosta, Oscar winner Jordan Peele and Win Rosenfeld, the plot follows Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as an artist who moves into the first film\u2019s gentrified Cabrini-Green neighborhood with his girlfriend. The slasher movie also stars Teyonah Parris, Colman Domingo, Vanessa Williams, Tony Todd and Virginia Madsen.<\/p>\n<p>The movie beat expectations,\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2021\/film\/box-office\/candyman-box-office-opening-weekend-projections-1235048754\/\">according to Variety<\/a>, since it was projected to earn $15 million in ticket sales.<\/p>\n<p>The blowout weekend for \u201cCandyman\u201d also marks the second-highest opening-weekend gross for a film directed by a black woman. Ava DuVernay holds that top spot, with 2018\u2019s \u201cA Wrinkle in Time,\u201d which grossed $33 million in its opening weekend. But she\u2019s is on a mission to change all of that.<\/p>\n<p>The Brooklyn native will make history yet again as <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2021\/film\/features\/nia-dacosta-horror-classic-candyman-1235044045\/\">the first black woman and the youngest person<\/a> to direct a Marvel film with \u201cThe Marvels\u201d \u2014 the sequel to 2019\u2019s \u201cCaptain Marvel.\u201d The superhero flick is currently in production and will hit theaters in 2022.\n                        <\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
