Beginning with iOS 15, Apple Music makes this feature even more compelling with head tracking on compatible headphones.<\/p>\n<p>So how do you use it and can it live up to the hype?<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_Is_Spatial_Audio\"><\/span>What Is Spatial Audio?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Spatial audio is a new way of experiencing audio that uses a combination of sensors and gyroscopes in your headphones alongside a source of surround sound audio to construct a virtual 3D space.<\/p>\n<p>If you move your head while listening to standard stereo audio, the sound moves with you. With spatial audio, the channels stay where they are as if you\u2019re standing in a surround sound booth with speakers all around you. Where a standard surround sound mix might use five or seven main channels and a stereo recording would use two, Dolby Atmos uses 128 channels to give producers and sound directors much more room to play.<\/p>\n<p>To be clear, Dolby Atmos and Apple\u2019s spatial audio are two separate technologies. Atmos is a surround sound <em>format<\/em> that can be used convincingly with spatial audio features like head tracking. Dolby\u2019s new format has all sorts of benefits outside of spatialized audio, like in soundbars and home cinema setups that don\u2019t depend on headphones.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Which_Devices_and_Headphones_Support_Spatial_Audio\"><\/span>Which Devices and Headphones Support Spatial Audio?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>At present, an iPhone 7 or later and the iPad Pro 12.9-inch (3rd generation or later), iPad Pro 11-inch, iPad Air (3rd generation or later), iPad (6th generation or later), and iPad mini (5th generation) support the feature. iOS 14 is required for spatial audio to work, but head tracking for Apple Music is limited to iOS 15 and later.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-744168\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/07\/airpods_pro.jpg?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"AirPods Pro\" width=\"650\" height=\"474\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span class=\"imagecredit\">Apple<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In addition to a compatible device and sound source, you\u2019ll also need headphones that can take advantage of head tracking. At present,\u00a0only the AirPods Pro and AirPods Max are supported. While other headphones are compatible with Dolby Atmos (including the original AirPods), not all have the gyroscopes and sensors required for head tracking.<\/p>\n<p>You can use compatible head-tracking headphones with an Apple TV running tvOS 15 to take advantage of the feature in video content. Apple Music has already made a few thousand recordings available in Dolby Atmos, and iOS 15 adds spatial audio head-tracking to take advantage of those additional channels.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-749163\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/classical.jpg?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"Apple Music Spatial Audio Classical Playlist\" width=\"650\" height=\"355\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>There are dedicated playlists for music with native spatial audio support, with a dedicated \u201cNow In Spatial Audio\u201d section under the Browse tab in Apple Music.\u00a0There is a good blend of old tracks that have been remastered in Atmos and new music that has been produced from scratch in the format.<\/p>\n<p>The feature is also useful for watching movies and TV shows, with services like Disney+, HBO Max, Hulu, Discovery+, Paramount+, Apple TV, and Vudu offering spatial audio on surround sound streams.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_Does_It_Sound_Like\"><\/span>What Does It Sound Like?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Spatial audio with head tracking is quite different from a standard \u201cflat\u201d stereo stream, and it won\u2019t always appeal to everyone. <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">General<\/a>ly speaking, mixes feel wider, with more room to breathe compared to stereo. This can make for a less fatiguing listening experience but it can also lessen the impact of some mixes.<\/p>\n<p>Depending on the music you are listening to, the effect can be subtle or pronounced. On older tracks that have been remastered for the format, like Queen\u2019s \u201cBohemian Rhapsody\u201d or Jackson 5\u2019s \u201cI Want You Back,\u201d the main vocals really stand out. Live music might be one of the best uses for the technology since it captures the essence of being surrounded by a crowd.<\/p>\n<p>Modern pop and hip hop tend to take things even further, with directional audio applied to a range of sounds and frequencies. The opening bars to Glass Animals\u2019 \u201cHeat Waves\u201d sound like the music is coming from behind you, making for an impactful juxtaposition when the track properly kicks in.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, it doesn\u2019t work well everywhere and it\u2019s not going to please purists. Some tracks, like the Atmos remaster of Guns N\u2019 Roses \u201cWelcome to the Jungle<em>,\u201d\u00a0<\/em>lack serious punch compared to the flat stereo mix. You might want a track like this to sound like you have your face pressed up to the PA at a stadium show, but in Atmos it sounds more like a bad car stereo. This isn\u2019t necessarily a genre thing, since Sublime\u2019s \u201cSanteria\u201d sounds great, like you\u2019re sitting in a grimy Long Beach practice space circa 1992.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-749161\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/santeria.jpg?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"Santeria by Sublime playing in Dolby Atmos\" width=\"650\" height=\"424\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Head tracking makes for a more dynamic soundscape and an arguably more interesting listening environment. But this can change the way music sounds. Not everyone is going to see this as a good thing. Some tracks that sound almost claustrophobic in stereo are just easier to listen to in Atmos, and they sound less \u201coverproduced\u201d too.<\/p>\n<p>Classical music might be the one genre where the results are most predictable. It\u2019s the closest thing you\u2019ll get to being at the orchestra without actually going to watch an orchestra, and the results are almost always better than a (by comparison, dull) stereo mix.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_Does_Head_Tracking_and_Movement_Work\"><\/span>How Does Head Tracking and Movement Work?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Head tracking is arguably best enjoyed while you\u2019re sitting still. If you\u2019re watching a TV show or movie, your device (e.g. an iPad) will remain the center channel, regardless of where you look. With music, things are a little different.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re walking around outside while listening to spatial audio with head tracking, the music will react to your movement. The good <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> is that the stream will correct itself when you\u2019ve faced the same direction for a few seconds.<\/p>\n<p>If you turn 90\u00ba to go around a corner, the audio will gradually adjust a few seconds later so that the direction you are facing becomes the new \u201ccenter\u201d position. It takes some getting used to, and you can disable it if you want to.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Can_You_Turn_It_Off\"><\/span>Can You Turn It Off?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>On an iPhone or iPad, you can turn off spatial audio via Control Center. You can also access your AirPods options under Settings &gt; Bluetooth by tapping the \u201ci\u201d next to your headphones and disabling Spatial Audio.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_Does_%E2%80%9CSpatialize_Stereo%E2%80%9D_Do\"><\/span>What Does \u201cSpatialize Stereo\u201d Do?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Your iPhone and iPad will offer to convert regular stereo audio to spatial audio using the Spatialize Stereo option in Control Center. You\u2019ll find this option in the same spot you usually use to enable or disable Spatial Audio.<\/p>\n<p>This feature is a mixed bag. It\u2019s essentially a virtual listening booth with a basic stereo recording pumped into it. While it might make some tracks sound a bit more dynamic and interesting, it\u2019s also not a great representation of the original track.
