Plant life is intertwined with infrastructure, and colourful handcrafted wares are sold along pedestrian walkways. There may be airships, but a Victorian-inspired, ominous steampunk landscape this is not. Nor has this near-future fantasy been corrupted by cyberpunk\u2019s superintelligent singularities and artificial, post-human visions.<\/p>\n<p>Enter a new aesthetic, inspired by art nouveau and Afrofuturism, that envisions a sustainable, often realistic, sometimes utopian next chapter in our story. It\u2019s called solarpunk.<\/p>\n<p>Although the label emerged about a decade ago, it is gaining traction: in 2018, a reference in the <em>Los Angeles Review of Books<\/em>; in 2020, another in the <em>Washington Post<\/em>. Arizona speculative fiction author Andrew Hudson worked on some of the first overtly solarpunk fiction\u2014a story he co-wrote called \u201cSunshine State\u201d won a climate fiction contest in 2016. \u201cIt\u2019s responding to a fatigue for dystopian and post-apocalyptic material,\u201d Hudson says, catching up with <em>Maclean\u2019s<\/em> in the middle of a Colorado camping <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trip<\/a>. \u201cSolarpunk tends to be really interested in solutions to climate change and ways that we might reimagine our communities to make us more dignified and h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>y. It tries to be a re-evaluation of what high <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a> means.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a rebellion, too\u2014hence the \u201cpunk\u201d\u2014against capitalism, anti-environmentalism and popular narratives about humanity\u2019s decline. \u201cOptimism has been taken away from us,\u201d declares an online solarpunk manifesto, \u201cand we are trying to take it back.\u201d<br \/>\n<span class=\"ctx-article-root\"><!-- --><\/span><\/p><\/div>\n<p><script async defer crossorigin=\"anonymous\" src=\"https:\/\/connect.facebook.net\/en_US\/sdk.js\"><\/script><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
