\n Education beat: More Money, Less Schooling<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cWhen schools shut down this spring, Congress sent them $31 billion,\u201d most of which hasn\u2019t even reached them \u2014 yet, The Federalist\u2019s Joy Pullmann laments, \u201ceducation special interests\u201d are now demanding nearly $430 billion extra for \u201conline math lessons\u201d at schools that won\u2019t even open in the fall. Remarkably, that\u2019s \u201c600 percent more than annual federal spending on K-12.\u201d Even supposedly deficit-conscious Republicans are on board with spending $105 billion. Such \u201cdemands for gobs of money\u201d without full reopenings have \u201cnothing to do with even pretending to educate kids safely,\u201d of course. The \u201cobvious solution\u201d is shifting \u201cmoney from the education blob to individual families,\u201d allowing non-wealthy parents to \u201cdesign a small-scale education for their kids.\u201d President Trump is \u201con their side,\u201d but congressional Republicans \u201cshould be, too.\u201d<\/p>\n

Retired FBI agent: Stop the Anti-Fed Nonsense<\/strong><\/p>\n

Left-wing politicians\u2019 claims that the federal agents President Trump sent to Portland, Ore., are acting like Guantanamo Bay guards and Nazi stormtroopers are \u201cnonsense,\u201d James M. Casey argues at The Hill. In \u00adreality, the agents are just protecting federal property against Portland \u00adrioters who now \u201cflagrantly break the law,\u201d even going so far as to assault the city\u2019s federal courthouse, with the explicit sanction of Mayor Ted Wheeler. And \u201ccontrary to some media<\/a> reports,\u201d those agents wear vests clearly identifying them as \u201cpolice\u201d and have been making \u201cprobable-cause arrests, or arrests based on warrants,\u201d not \u201crounding up \u2018innocent protesters.\u2019\u200a\u201d In sum, federal law-enforcement agents are doing their jobs legally. The false parallels and moral equivalences have to stop.<\/p>\n

From the left: The Key to Joe\u2019s Veep Choice<\/strong><\/p>\n

Joe Biden is going to choose a running mate who can \u201chelp him not only win an election,\u201d but also \u201cgovern in what promises to be a whirlwind,\u201d predicts ex-Obama adviser David Axelrod at CNN.com. We already know \u201cthe candidate will be a woman,\u201d and four of the top contenders are black \u2014 an important factor, as large \u201cturnout among voters of color\u201d will be essential to a Biden victory come November. Most important for the ex-veep, however, he wants \u201ca loyal partner\u201d who could also \u201cmake the best president,\u201d if necessary. That\u2019s why conversations with veep possibilities will matter more to Biden than \u201cany political calculations.\u201d Primarily, he wants \u201ca partner for the years, and not just months, to come.\u201d<\/p>\n

Culture critic: Will They Cancel Duranty?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Last month saw the US release of the \u201cmust-see\u201d movie \u201cMr. Jones,\u201d Francis X. Maier raves at First Things. It\u2019s based on the story of Gareth Jones, the hero British journalist who blew the lid on the terror famine inflicted on Ukraine by Joseph Stalin. That makes it especially \u201crelevant\u201d today, \u201cwhen lying, bullying and violence seem to be making a comeback in the vestments of progress, equality and justice.\u201d One of the villains is Pulitzer-winning New York Times reporter Walter Duranty, \u201can inventive, always-reliable flack for the Soviet regime,\u201d who \u201cled the ferocious, Soviet-prodded attack on Jones\u2019s credibility.\u201d \u201cThe ghost of Walter Duranty,\u201d who died in 1957, \u201cstill has his Pulitzer,\u201d sighs Maier. \u201cIt\u2019s an obscenity that warriors of the cancel culture may want to address.\u201d<\/p>\n

From the right: Race-Based Fixes Backfire<\/strong><\/p>\n

Since George Floyd\u2019s killing in Minneapolis in May, observes Linda Chavez at RealClearPolitics, left-wing protesters have insisted that \u201csystemic racism infects everything.\u201d Yet \u201cattempts to eradicate\u201d racial disparities \u201care likely to lead to bad fixes that end up doing real harm.\u201d \u00adRacial preferences in college admissions, for example, are meant to help African Americans and Hispanics, yet they have \u201creal costs,\u201d including to minority groups themselves, whose achievements are subtly questioned. Similarly, \u201ccalls to defund the police . . . hire more black police officers\u201d and \u201cinsist on diversity and implicit-bias training\u201d might not only be \u201cineffective, they may exacerbate other serious problems.\u201d To bolster race relations, Americans must believe we\u2019re \u201cone nation and one people, no matter our color,\u201d says Chavez. We will \u201ceither achieve greatness together or fall into permanent divisions that doom our future.\u201d<\/p>\n
