More importantly, she questioned his claim that the NFL tried to obtain the elevator video, which the city\u2019s prosecutors essentially denied had been formally requested.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing is personal between Roger Goodell and me,\u201d she later <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thewrap.com\/rachel-nichols-espn\/\">told the Wrap<\/a>. \u201cI actually think he is smart and interesting, but there are questions you have to ask. Sports media blog Awful Announcing said she was the \u201cstar\u201d of the press conference. Sports Illustrated called her \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/vault.si.com\/vault\/2014\/10\/13\/the-case-for-rachel-nichols\">the country\u2019s most impactful and prominent female sports journalist.<\/a>\u201d And someone even edited her Wikipedia page, changing her job title to \u201cowner of Roger Goodell.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In 2016, she was lured back to ESPN, where she remained a prominent face hosting \u201cThe Jump\u201d and handling numerous other NBA assignments. <\/p>\n<p>But then the 47-year-old touched a third rail in a particularly fraught time in our culture: race. <\/p>\n<p>Last week, ESPN unceremoniously cancelled her show and dropped her from any NBA coverage, essentially cutting ties with the once-lionized reporter. (ESPN is paying out the remainder of her contract.)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGot to create a whole show and spend five years hanging out with some of my favorite people talking about one my favorite things. More to come\u2026\u201d she <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Rachel__Nichols\/status\/1430620960156266498\">wrote on Twitter<\/a>. <\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>The offense that led to her demise and a firestorm within ESPN? It was caught on the network\u2019s camera, which was transmitted to their Connecticut offices and recorded on a cellphone by an employee, who showed it to colleagues, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/07\/04\/sports\/basketball\/espn-rachel-nichols-maria-taylor.html\">according to the New York Times<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>It was also arguably illegally recorded.<\/p>\n<p>Given that both Connecticut and Florida are two-party consent states, meaning both people have to agree to being recorded, experts have said Nichols has a strong legal case against ESPN.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n    <\/aside>\n<p>\u201cIn my opinion, ESPN doesn\u2019t have a leg to stand on,\u201d Matt Netti, an attorney in the office of the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a> counsel at Northeastern University and contributor to sports legal site Conduct Detrimental, told The Post. \u201cI should hope for their own sake that they reached a settlement with her and paid her a lot of money.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He called the taping a violation of the two-party consent laws, adding, \u201cEven if it was a one-party state, it seemed like neither Nichols nor Mendelsohn knew they were being recorded. More than likely this video was captured illegally and distributed.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Netti said she could have a case with violation of privacy. \u201cShe had a right to feel secure and that this conversation was private,\u201d he said. ESPN is also guilty of a \u201cstandard breach of contract,\u201d he added, since they took her off her assignment in the first place.<\/p>\n<p>ESPN declined to comment and a rep for Nichols did not return a call from The Post.<\/p>\n<p>Though the video did not surface until a year later, the public fallout and her subsequent fall from grace was quite swift.<\/p>\n<p>After the story broke, Nichols apologized to Taylor, who was in the midst of contract negotiations and landed at NBC Sports in late July. But the damage was done. Many saw her remarks as racially insensitive.<\/p>\n<p>Within the cutthroat industry, Nichols was known for her sharp elbows and ultra-competitive bent toward landing high-profile interviews. Is it more important to me what I think of what I am doing or what the guys around me think of what I am doing? And when you decide that it\u2019s important what you think, that is first of all very freeing and it\u2019s also a north star\u2026 I trust my instincts.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>It seems she\u2019s always had an internal career compass. Nichols was raised in Potomac, Maryland, where her father was an attorney and her mother worked for the National Institute of Mental Health. She played soccer as a kid and began honing her passion for journalism in her tween years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew pretty early. I was on the school paper back in junior high and never really stopped,\u201d she <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20171027044001\/http:\/\/www.midwestsportsfans.com\/2010\/08\/interview-with-rachel-nichols-espn\">told Midwest Sports Fans<\/a>.  <\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom the beginning, sports seemed like the best gig to me. As a kid, the idea that people got paid to follow sports for a living seemed like getting paid to go to recess. Actually, as an adult, I still think that sometimes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She graduated from Northwestern University\u2019s Medill School of Journalism in 1995, landing her first sports writing gig at the Fort Lauderdale Sun Sentinel. The pair met as teenagers at a summer camp in Maine and reconnected as adults. They have 10-year-old twin daughters.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s unclear where she goes from here.
