{"id":333547,"date":"2021-09-02T00:10:22","date_gmt":"2021-09-01T21:10:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/sweetgreen-ceo-called-fat-phobic-for-covid-obesity-claims\/"},"modified":"2021-09-02T00:10:22","modified_gmt":"2021-09-01T21:10:22","slug":"sweetgreen-ceo-called-fat-phobic-for-covid-obesity-claims","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/sweetgreen-ceo-called-fat-phobic-for-covid-obesity-claims\/","title":{"rendered":"#Sweetgreen CEO called \u2018fat-phobic\u2019 for COVID obesity claims"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#Sweetgreen CEO called \u2018fat-phobic\u2019 for COVID obesity claims<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n        <\/aside>\n<p>Jonathan Neman, the CEO of salad chain Sweetgreen, has found himself tossed into controversy after <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>earing to assert that the \u201croot cause\u201d of the COVID-19 pandemic is obesity and that society should ban certain foods in response.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201c78% of hospitalizations due to COVID are Obese and Overweight people,\u201d Neman began <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20210831163953\/https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/feed\/update\/urn:li:activity:6838168378318950400\/\">his now-deleted LinkedIn post<\/a>. \u201cIs there an underlying problem that perhaps we have not given enough attention to? Is there another way to think about how we tackle \u201chealthcare\u201d by addressing the root cause?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The article goes on to list three points \u2014 that COVID is endemic, that mask and vaccine mandates have been prioritized over \u201chealth mandates\u201d and that obesity causing the pandemic should serve as an inspiration to create \u201ca healthier future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And what does the leader of this restaurant chain selling $15 salads believe a healthier future involves?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat if we made the food that is making us sick illegal? What if we taxed processed food and refined sugar to pay for the impact of the pandemic? What if we incentivized health?\u201d he proposed. \u201cRepairing our food system could save us $2 Trillion a year in direct\u00a0costs ($1T in Healthcare, $1T in Environmental Impact). OUR TIME IS NOW.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>LinkedIn commenters were quick to point out that Neman appears to be shaming overweight individuals, who while indeed more vulnerable to COVID were, for numerous reasons, arguably not its \u201croot cause.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYikes. This is incredibly fat-phobic,\u201d wrote one senior manager of content development and self-reported \u201cfan of Sweetgreen for years\u201d in a comment viewed by The Post before Neman apparently deleted it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-default\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/09\/sweetgreen-covid-02.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1024\" alt=\"Critics of the post called the Sweetgreen CEO &quot;fat-phobic.&quot;\" class=\"wp-image-19318854\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/09\/sweetgreen-covid-02.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/09\/sweetgreen-covid-02.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/09\/sweetgreen-covid-02.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>Critics of the post called the Sweetgreen CEO \u201cfat-phobic.\u201d<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">San Francisco Chronicle via Gett<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>While Neman responded to acknowledge that the commenter\u2019s criticism made \u201csome good points,\u201d he defended his original post, writing that it \u201cwas meant to be a thought-starter on how we could think of health differently (instead of just sickness) and attack the root causes that are killing us beyond the one in the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> every day (COVID).\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Twitter<\/a> users dragged the article even harder.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSweetgreen CEO thinks his company\u2019s expensive dry ass salads might help more with the pandemic than vaccines, masks and relief payments,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/bigblackjacobin\/status\/1433126131704770573\">wrote<\/a> Vice writer Edward Ongweso Jr., who first reported the post.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just ate a donut and I challenge Jonathan Neman to a die-off. First person to die loses.
