Normally, the problem is on the website itself, and there\u2019s nothing you can do. Other times, this error occurs because of a problem with your computer or networking equipment.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_is_a_502_Bad_Gateway_Error\"><\/span>What is a 502 Bad Gateway Error?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>A 502 Bad Gateway Error means that the web server you\u2019ve connected to is acting as a proxy for relaying information from another server, but it has gotten a bad response from that other server. It\u2019s called a 502 error because that\u2019s the HTTP status code that the webserver uses to describe that kind of error.<\/p>\n<p>These bad responses could be due to a number of different causes. It\u2019s possible the server is overloaded or there are network issues between the two servers, and it\u2019s just a temporary problem. It\u2019s also possible there\u2019s an improperly configured firewall or even a coding error, and that the problem won\u2019t get fixed until those issues are addressed.<\/p>\n<p>Just like with <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/353486\/how-to-fix-a-404-not-found-error\/\">404 errors, website designers can customize how a 502 error looks. So, you might see different-looking 502 pages on different websites. Websites might also use slightly different names for this error. For example, you might see things like:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>HTTP Error 502 Bad Gateway<\/li>\n<li>HTTP 502<\/li>\n<li>502 Service Temporarily Overloaded<\/li>\n<li>Temporary Error (502)<\/li>\n<li>502 Server Error: The server encountered a temporary error and could not complete your request<\/li>\n<li>502 Bad Gateway Nginx<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The vast majority of the time, this is just an error on the server-side of things that you won\u2019t be able to do anything about. Sometimes, it\u2019s a temporary error; sometimes it isn\u2019t. Still, there are some things you can try on your end of things.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Refresh_the_Page\"><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" name=\"autotoc_anchor_1\">Refresh the Page<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Refreshing the page is always worth a shot. Many times the 502 error is temporary, and a simple refresh might do the trick. There are lots of tools out there for this, but our favorites are <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.isitdownrightnow.com\/\">isitdownrightnow.com<\/a> and <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/downforeveryoneorjustme.com\/\">downforeveryoneorjustme.com<\/a>. Both work pretty much the same. If the report shows that the site is up, then the problem might be on your end. It\u2019s very rare this is the case with a 502 error, but it is possible, and you can try some of the things we describe in the next few sections.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Try_Another_Browser\"><\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" name=\"autotoc_anchor_3\">Try Another Browser<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>It\u2019s possible that an issue with your browser might be causing the 502 Bad Gateway error. One easy way to check this out is to use a different browser and see if it works. You can use <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/chrome\">Google Chrome<\/a>, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mozilla.org\/en-US\/firefox\/new\/\">Mozilla Firefox<\/a>, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.apple.com\/in\/safari\">Apple Safari<\/a>, or <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/click.linksynergy.com\/deeplink?id=2QzUaswX1as&amp;mid=24542&amp;u1=htg\/356389&amp;murl=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.microsoft.com%2Fen-in%2Fwindows%2Fmicrosoft-edge\">Microsoft Edge<\/a>. If you can see the error in the new browser as well, then you know it\u2019s not a browser issue, and you should try another solution.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Clear_Your_Browsers_Cache_and_Cookies\"><\/span>Clear Your Browser\u2019s Cache and Cookies<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>If trying a different browser works, it\u2019s possible that your main browser has cached outdated or corrupt files that might be causing the 502 error. So you know the problem is likely something on your end, but it\u2019s not your browser.<\/p>\n<p>It is possible that there are some strange, temporary issues with your computer or your networking equipment (Wi-Fi, router, modem, etc.). Changing your DNS servers is not a likely fix, but it is a possible one. And it\u2019s not too hard to do. Unless you\u2019ve changed them yourself, your DNS servers are probably be set by your ISP.
