This isn\u2019t a filmed version of that show, but rather something that combines elements of that production with documentary footage and animation. The stage production, which played at the Apollo Theater in 2018, took the\u00a0\u201cdifficult but necessary conversations around Black life and death and places them center stage.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Published in 2015,\u00a0Ta-Nehisi Coates\u2019\u00a0<em>Between the World and Me<\/em> was written as a letter to the author\u2019s teenage son, and \u201crecounts the author\u2019s experiences growing up in Baltimore\u2019s inner city and his growing fear of daily violence against the Black community. The narrative explores Coates\u2019 bold notion that American society structurally supports white supremacy.\u201d The book became a\u00a0New York Times Bestseller, National Book Award winner, and Pulitzer Prize finalist.<\/p>\n<p>The book was then adapted into a stage show after<strong>\u00a0Kamilah Forbes<\/strong>, a close friend of Coates who is featured in the book, was inspired to adapt it to the stage after reading it. Here\u2019s how the production was described:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>A profound work that pivots from the biggest questions around racism and police violence to the most intimate concerns of a father for his son,\u00a0<i>Between the World and Me<\/i>\u00a0offers a powerful framework for understanding our nation\u2019s history and asks:\u00a0What is it like to inhabit a Black body and find a way to live within it? And how can we all honestly reckon with this fraught history and free ourselves from its burden?\u00a0<i>Between the World and Me<\/i>, both the book and the theatrical event, is an eye-opening, emotional look inside these conversations.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>And here\u2019s a look at it.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Between_the_World_and_Me\"><\/span><strong>Between the World and Me<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" allow=\"autoplay; fullscreen\" allowfullscreen=\"\" frameborder=\"0\" height=\"416\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/362106653?dnt=1&#038;app_id=122963\" title=\"Between the World and Me 2019\" width=\"740\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>And now, <em>Between the World and Me<\/em> is headed to HBO. The HBO adaptation will combine elements from the stage show along with readings from the book, documentary footage, archival footage, and animation.\u00a0Kamilah Forbes will direct while Ta-Nehisi Coates and Susan Kelechi Watson will serve as executive producers, with Roger Ross Williams producing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTa-Nehisi\u2019s book is a modern literary classic that provides an essential message for our times,\u201d said Casey Bloys, President, HBO Programming. \u201cWe are tremendously proud to bring this incredibly important event to our audiences.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kamilah Forbes added: \u201cAs people across our country continue to speak out about violent, systemic racism and the urgent need for tangible change, Ta-Nehisi\u2019s words resonate as strongly today as they did five years ago.
