Scientists even have a name for the queasy feeling: the \u201cuncanny valley\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Now, thanks to researchers in Italy, we also know it\u2019s more than just a feeling.<\/p>\n<p>A team at the Istituto Italiano Di Tecnologia (IIT) in Genoa have shown how a robot\u2019s gaze can trick us into thinking we are <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">social<\/a>ly interacting and slow our ability to make decisions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGaze is an extremely important social signal that we employ on a day-to-day basis when interacting with others,\u201d said Professor Agnieszka Wykowska, lead author of the research, published on Wednesday in the journal <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/sciencee\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"5\" title=\"Science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Science<\/a> Robots.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe question is whether the robot gaze will evoke very similar mechanisms in the human brain as another human\u2019s gaze would.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The team asked 40 volunteers to play a video <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">game<\/a> of \u201cchicken\u201d \u2013 where each player has to decide whether to allow a car to drive straight towards another car or to deviate to avoid a collision \u2013 against a humanoid robot sitting opposite them.<\/p>\n<p>Between rounds players had to look at the robot, which would sometimes look back and other times look away.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/09\/2021-09-01T183653Z_1180036956_RC26HP9ZH3DK_RTRMADP_3_TECH-ROBOT-GAZE-1.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1024\" alt=\"An\u00a0employee\u00a0holds\u00a0an\u00a0eye\u00a0for a\u00a0humanoid\u00a0robot\u00a0developed\u00a0by Promobot service\u00a0robotics manufacturer at the company's branch in the far eastern city of Vladivostok, Russia March 15, 2021. \" class=\"wp-image-19329783\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/09\/2021-09-01T183653Z_1180036956_RC26HP9ZH3DK_RTRMADP_3_TECH-ROBOT-GAZE-1.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/09\/2021-09-01T183653Z_1180036956_RC26HP9ZH3DK_RTRMADP_3_TECH-ROBOT-GAZE-1.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/09\/2021-09-01T183653Z_1180036956_RC26HP9ZH3DK_RTRMADP_3_TECH-ROBOT-GAZE-1.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>An\u00a0employee\u00a0holds\u00a0an\u00a0eye\u00a0for a\u00a0humanoid\u00a0robot\u00a0developed\u00a0by Promobot service\u00a0robotics manufacturer at the company\u2019s branch in the far eastern city of Vladivostok, Russia March 15, 2021. <\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Reuters\/Yuri Maltsev<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In each scenario, the scientists collected data on behavior and neural activity via electroencephalography (EEG), which detects electrical activity in the brain.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur results show that, actually, the human brain processes the robot gaze as a social signal and that signal has an impact on the way we\u2019re making decisions, on the strategies we deploy in the game and also on our responses,\u201d Wykowska said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe mutual gaze of the robot affected decisions by delaying them, so humans were much slower in making the decisions in the game.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The findings have implications on where and how humanoid robots are deployed in future.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnce we understand when robots elicit social attunement, then we can decide it which sort of context this is desirable and beneficial for humans and in which context this should not occur,\u201d said Wykowska.<\/p>\n<p>According to a report by the International Federation of Robotics, worldwide sales of professional service robots had already jumped 32 percent to $11.2 billion between 2018 and 2019.\n                        <\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
