The EU\u2019s data watchdogs are starting to flex their muscles. Weeks after Amazon was fined a record \u20ac746 (886M) for breaching GDPR rules, WhatsApp has been hit with the regime\u2019s second-highest penalty.<\/p>\n

The \u20ac225m ($267m) fine was <\/span>issued by the Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC). The body is Europe\u2019s l<\/span>ead authority for WhatsApp owner Facebook, which has its EU headquarters in Ireland.<\/p>\n

The DPC said that WhatsApp had infringed the EU\u2019s transparency rules<\/a>:<\/p>\n

This includes information provided to data subjects about the processing of information between WhatsApp and other Facebook companies.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The watchdog also ordered the company to take \u201cremedial actions\u201d to ensure its data processing complies with the rules. WhatsApp said it would appeal the \u201centirely disproportionate\u201d fine.<\/span><\/p>\n

Regardless of the final decision, the EU may finally be turning its tough talk on data protection into action.<\/p>\n

The bloc passed the landmark General<\/a> Data Protection Regulation (<\/span>GDPR) back in 2018, but critics say it\u2019s been a blunt sword<\/a>\u00a0thus far.<\/span><\/p>\n
