{"id":334349,"date":"2021-09-01T19:10:31","date_gmt":"2021-09-01T16:10:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/google-challenges-591m-french-fine-amid-broader-antitrust-war\/"},"modified":"2021-09-01T19:10:31","modified_gmt":"2021-09-01T16:10:31","slug":"google-challenges-591m-french-fine-amid-broader-antitrust-war","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/google-challenges-591m-french-fine-amid-broader-antitrust-war\/","title":{"rendered":"#Google challenges $591M French fine amid broader antitrust war"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#Google challenges $591M French fine amid broader antitrust war<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n        <\/aside>\n<p>Google plans to fight a $591 million fine that was levied by France\u2019s antitrust watchdog earlier this summer over compensating publishers for <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> content \u2014 just one front in a broader battle that has the tech giant facing off against anti-monopoly regulators across the globe.<\/p>\n<p>French authorities first levied the fine against Google in July, accusing the company of making money from news publishers\u2019 content without negotiating to pay for it in good faith \u2014 a gripe similar to complaints made by regulators across Europe and Australia, as well as by politicians and publishers in the US.  <\/p>\n<p>Google said Wednesday that the punishment was unfair and said it will ask Paris\u2019 court of <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>eal to overturn the fine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe disagree with a number of legal elements, and believe that the fine is disproportionate to our efforts to reach an agreement and comply with the new law,\u201d said Sebastien Missoffe, head of Google France, on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>But France\u2019s competition watchdog, the French Competition Authority, fired back that Google must pay the fine regardless of its plans to appeal. The authority did not say how long the appeal process would take.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>France is not the only place where Google has faced scrutiny for its practices, particularly when it comes to its use of material produced by publishers.<\/p>\n<p>In February, Australia\u00a0passed a law requiring Google and <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Facebook<\/a> to pay for news\u00a0\u2014 and New York Post parent company News Corp.\u00a0negotiated its own global deal with Google\u00a0to reportedly be paid \u201ctens of millions\u201d of dollars to provide news content during the same month.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-eu-alphabet-antitrust\/axel-springer-unit-others-say-google-still-playing-unfairly-want-eu-to-act-idUSKBN1Y20W4\">tussled<\/a> with Google over paying for content. <\/p>\n<p>Axel Springer\u2019s ownership of an influential Washington D.C. publisher could put pressure on federal lawmakers to make Silicon Valley pay up for news content, some analysts say.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Google and Apple are both also facing antitrust pressure in the US, Europe and Asia over the hefty payments fees the companies charge app developers.<\/p>\n<p>Developers argue that, among other things, it\u2019s unfair to make customers use Google\u2019s and Apple\u2019s payment systems \u2014 which allow the tech behemoths to take a 30 percent cut of the cost a \u201cstranglehold\u201d over developers by blocking them from requiring use of their own payments systems.<\/p>\n<p>The European Union also opened an investigation last year into whether such payments commissions violate antitrust law. <\/p>\n<p>In France, the fine came in response to complaints first brought by French news publisher Agence France-Presse, as well as industry groups representing major newspapers like Le Monde and Le Figaro.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Paris regulators had ordered Google in 2020 to hold talks over payments for news within three months of any publisher Google allegedly \u201crestricted the scope of negotiation without justification,\u201d including by requiring publishers to participate in a new partnership program called \u201cNews Showcase.\u201d These restrictions violated the government\u2019s order to negotiate in good faith, France\u2019s antitrust authority said.<\/p>\n<p>At the time, the regulator gave Google two months to introduce a new plan to pay publishers \u2014 a deadline that\u2019s set to pass later in September \u2014 and threatened to slap the company with fines of more than $1 million per day if it did not abide by the ruling. <\/p>\n<p>At the time, Google said it had \u201cacted in good faith throughout the entire process\u201d and said the fine ignored the \u201creality of how news works on our platforms.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, Missoffe said the company continued to \u201cwork hard to resolve this case and put deals in place.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis includes expanding offers to 1,200 publishers, clarifying aspects of our contracts, and sharing more data as requested by the French Competition Authority,\u201d Google\u2019s France chief added.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><em>With Post
