{"id":334904,"date":"2021-09-03T17:46:22","date_gmt":"2021-09-03T14:46:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/apple-delays-child-safety-feature-after-privacy-outcry\/"},"modified":"2021-09-03T17:46:22","modified_gmt":"2021-09-03T14:46:22","slug":"apple-delays-child-safety-feature-after-privacy-outcry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/apple-delays-child-safety-feature-after-privacy-outcry\/","title":{"rendered":"#Apple delays &#8216;child safety&#8217; feature after privacy outcry"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">App<\/a>le delays &#8216;child safety&#8217; feature after privacy outcry<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n        <\/aside>\n<p>Apple bowed to privacy and civil liberties advocates Friday when it\u00a0agreed to delay\u00a0and modify\u00a0a controversial plan to scan users\u2019 photos for child pornography.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The company\u2019s tool, called \u201cneuralMatch,\u201d would scan images on Apple users\u2019 devices before they\u2019re uploaded to iCloud.\u00a0A separate tool would sift through users\u2019 encrypted messages for child pornography.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>After Apple announced the effort in August, privacy advocates hit back at the company. <\/p>\n<p>The Electronic Frontier Foundation, a digital privacy group, racked up more than 25,000 <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/act.eff.org\/action\/tell-apple-don-t-scan-our-phones\">signatures on a petition<\/a> against the tool, while the American Civil Liberties Union <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/cdt.org\/insights\/international-coalition-calls-on-apple-to-abandon-plan-to-build-surveillance-capabilities-into-iphones-ipads-and-other-products\/\">said in a letter<\/a> that the tool would \u201ccensor protected speech, threaten the privacy and security of people around the world, and have disastrous consequences for many children.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Critics say the tool could easily be misused by repressive governments to track and punish users for all kinds of content besides child pornography,\u00a0including\u00a0political content.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And some privacy activists have pointed to Apple\u2019s\u00a0seemingly accommodating relationship\u00a0with the government of China, where the vast majority of its devices are manufactured,\u00a0as evidence that the company would allow the tool\u00a0to be used for political repression.<\/p>\n<p>In a call with reporters prior to Friday\u2019s announcement, an Apple representative was asked whether the company would exit the Chinese market if authorities demanded the company to use the scanning tool for other purposes. It\u2019s now unclear when the company plans to release the features or how they\u2019ll be changed.<\/p>\n<p>Apple has said that the tool will flag only images that are already in a database of known child pornography, meaning parents who take photos of their children bathing would not be flagged, for example.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Another one of Apple\u2019s features would have scanned images sent to minors through iMessage for porn, blurring such images and sending a warning to the child.<\/p>\n<p>Johns Hopkins University cybersecurity researcher Matthew Green, a critic of Apple\u2019s features, said Friday\u2019s move \u201clooks promising.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTalk to the technical and policy communities before you do whatever you\u2019re going to do,\u201d Green wrote in a\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/matthew_d_green\/status\/1433796370264117255\">Twitter thread<\/a>\u00a0addressing Apple. \u201cTalk to the <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a> public as well.
