Some smartphones are moving away from fingerprints and using facial recognition for biometric security. If you own a Samsung Galaxy phone, you likely can use both fingerprint and face unlock to get into your handset. We\u2019ll show you how it works.<\/p>\n

Before we dive in, it\u2019s important to understand that face unlock on Android devices, such as a Samsung Galaxy phone, is not as secure as App<\/a>le\u2019s \u201cFace ID.\u201d iPhones are using a variety of sensors to detect faces, whereas Android devices are typically just storing a photo of your face.<\/p>\n

So you may not be able to use your face to authenticate mobile payments on an Android device, but it can still be a convenient way to unlock your phone. Let\u2019s do it.<\/p>\n

First, swipe down once from the top of your Samsung Galaxy device\u2019s screen and tap the gear icon.<\/p>\n

Next, go to the \u201cBiometrics and Security\u201d section.<\/p>\n

Select \u201cFace Recognition.\u201d<\/p>\n

If you already have some sort of security method enabled (PIN, pattern, etc), you\u2019ll be asked to enter that now.<\/p>\n

You\u2019ll see some introductory information about face recognition. Tap \u201cContinue\u201d to proceed with setting it up.<\/p>\n

First, you\u2019ll be asked if you wear glasses. Select \u201cYes\u201d or \u201cNo\u201d and tap \u201cContinue.\u201d<\/p>\n

The next step is to register your face. Hold the camera up until your face is in the frame. It will scan your face very quickly.<\/p>\n

Once your face has been scanned, you\u2019ll be given the choice to require a swipe on the lock screen even if your face is detected. This is a way to ensure your phone doesn\u2019t immedia<\/a>tely go past the lock screen if you don\u2019t want to. Toggle it on or off and tap \u201cDone.\u201d<\/p>\n

That\u2019s it for the initial setup! If you\u2019d like, you can tap \u201cAdd Alternative Look\u201d to scan your face one more time.<\/p>\n
