Garcia is a member of a different 1 percent club: kidnapped kids returned to their families.<\/p>\n<p>In 1981, when she was 8 years old, Garcia \u2014 a tomboy who loved \u00adbaseball \u2014 was nabbed from a mall in \u00adOrlando, Fla.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI remember a Lionel Playworld across the street. It had a kangaroo mascot that I looked at the entire time I was being sexually assaulted,\u201d she told The Post. Her kidnapper was driving off with her when \u00adanother car ran a stop sign \u2014 forcing the man to brake and giving Garcia an escape.<\/p>\n<p>As devastating as the experience was, it would take some 25 years for Garcia to comprehend the truth.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s because a police detective instructed her parents not to discuss what had happened with Garcia. \u201cNobody wanted to talk about it, so I didn\u2019t bring it up,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<span class=\"embed-youtube\" style=\"text-align:center; display: block;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Untold  Movie Trailer\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/1zAP2R36nJI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/span>\n<\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>But all the while, it was secretly eating away at her soul \u2014 and would eventually consume her to the point that she couldn\u2019t live day to day.<\/p>\n<p>Once she finally started digging for the truth, she made a shocking discovery: As an attorney pointed out to her, her case has remarkable similarities to one of the most infamous child-kidnapping cases of the past 40 years \u2014 that of 6-year-old Adam Walsh, the murdered son of \u201cAmerica\u2019s Most Wanted\u201d TV host John Walsh. Even John Walsh himself believes the same sick man nabbed Garcia and Adam.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s very similar. There are so many parallels,\u201d Walsh told The Post. \u201cHer case is so much like [Adam\u2019s].\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Now, with the guidance of her mentor, \u201cWonder Woman\u201d director Patty Jenkins, Garcia has made a film about her experience. \u00ad\u201c<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.untoldthefilm.com\/\">Untold: This Is My Story<\/a>\u201d premieres in Los Angeles on Sept. 6 at the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/danceswithfilms.com\/\">Dances With Films Festival<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>As only 1 percent of kidnapped children actually make it home, Garcia knows how lucky she is: \u201cStatistically speaking, I shouldn\u2019t be alive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Garcia grew up in a military family. Her dad, Charlie, was a combat pilot from Puerto Rico who flew more than 100 missions into enemy territory under the guise of Air America, a division of the CIA. Her mother was a beauty queen whose own father, a World War II prisoner of war, received a Purple Heart. While their mother paid a bill at Sears, Gina, 8, and her 18-year-old sibling hung out at a bookstore. They were all supposed to meet up at \u00adOrange Julius for a sweet treat later. But as her sister browsed, a man approached Gina.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe bumped into my butt while I was sitting on the floor,\u201d said Garcia, who was working on a <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/sciencee\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"5\" title=\"Science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">science<\/a> project. He flashed a badge, told her that he was with security and that he had some books on Saturn in his car. \u201cI followed him because I wanted to get a good grade,\u201d Garcia recalled. \u201cThere was no screaming or yelling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Things turned when they reached the car. \u201cHe went from nice guy to a monster,\u201d she said. The man shoved her inside and, knife held to her small body, raped her.<br \/>He was driving her out of the parking lot when Garcia was able to leap out of the car. Pants down and barefoot, she ran back into the mall and found her sister, who hadn\u2019t even realized the girl was missing. Security paged their mom and the police were alerted.<\/p>\n<p>A rape kit detected semen and police found a stolen car with the attacker\u2019s hat, but \u201cthey threw it all out,\u201d said Garcia. Although a police report was filed, cops told her parents to just be grateful she was alive. \u201cThey were more concerned with returning the stolen car than they were with a proper investigation,\u201d Garcia said.<\/p>\n<p>A spokesperson for the Orlando Police Department told The Post, \u201cThe records .\u2009.\u2009. show that in October of 1981, an investigation was conducted utilizing all available resources at the time. On Oct. 26, 1981, the detective assigned to Gina Garcia\u2019s case designated this investigation as \u2018inactive,\u2019 pending the surfacing of any new evidence and\/or leads.\u201d<br \/>Garcia went to sleep that night in the bunk beds she shared with her brother, Michael, and missed a couple of days of school. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"683\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/09\/gina-garcia-walsh-kidnapping-3.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=683\" alt=\"Police believe serial killer Ottis Toole killed Adam Walsh in 1981. It\u2019s not like how it is today,\u201d said Garcia. \u201cMy mom was going to take [the truth] to the grave. I blacked out the assault.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At first it seemed OK. Garcia was the host of her elementary school\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> show. Later she was voted Student Council president and played multiple sports in high school. But beneath her veneer, there were cracks.<\/p>\n<p>She was secretly coming to grips with her homosexuality, after a secret freshman-year affair with her male basketball coach. She also had undiagnosed dyslexia, which led to her dropping out of high school. After getting her GED and landing a softball scholarship at Seminole College, Garcia dropped out there, too.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAny time I was pulling ahead, I would self-destruct,\u201d she said. \u201cI would do things unintentionally to destroy myself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Romantic relationships always seemed to be doomed \u2014 \u201cI couldn\u2019t look someone in the eye,\u201d she recalled \u2014 and she struggled with weight issues. Being heavy, she said, was \u201ca way to protect myself. I wanted to kind of be invisible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Garcia joined the Navy and, as a petty officer, was assigned to NATO \u2014 earning high-level clearance working in computer logistics and weapons tracking for sub\u00admarines.<\/p>\n<p>She left the military as a disabled vet due to a sports injury at 23 and opened a bicycle shop in Orlando. But when the business was plagued with a string of break-ins, Garcia had a surprise reaction: a wave of debilitating flashbacks from her childhood trauma.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI literally thought I was going crazy. I couldn\u2019t get off the couch, I couldn\u2019t function. I kept seeing this face,\u201d she said, adding that she was hit by phantom smells and tastes, too. \u201cI thought I was losing my mind. I literally blocked everything out,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>In 2008 at age 36, Garcia looked at her \u00adpolice report for the first time, thanks to a friend who was an attorney for the City of Orlando.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe answers of what happened to me, I read from my 8-year-old self,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>But when her attorney friend read the file, she gasped: \u201cOh my God, your [case] is just like Adam Walsh\u2019s.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Adam was 6 years old when he was abducted from a Hollywood, Fla., mall on July 27, 1981 \u2014 less than three months before Garcia was taken. After a two-week search that garnered nationwide attention, a fisherman discovered the boy\u2019s severed head in a canal between Hollywood and Orlando, where Garcia would later be kidnapped.<\/p>\n<p>Garcia said that, like Adam, \u201cI was sodomized. [The attacker] thought I was a little boy. I was a little tomboy. The only difference is, someone ran a stop sign, my abductor hit the brakes \u2014 and I got out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She refuses to dwell on the identity of her attacker, but said: \u201cI know with 100 percent certainty I was abducted 2\u00bd months after Adam\u2019s abduction. There are similar behaviors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Adam\u2019s father, John Walsh, become an outspoken advocate for missing children and the host of \u201cAmerica\u2019s Most Wanted.\u201d He continued seeking answers in his son\u2019s case for three decades before, in 2008, \u00adHollywood police determined the killer was Ottis Toole, a serial killer who had died in prison in 1996 while serving five life sentences for other homicides.<\/p>\n<p>In 2020 while promoting his show \u201cIn Pursuit with John Walsh,\u201d Adam\u2019s father \u00ad<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/crime\/john-walsh-adam-slain-son-most-beautiful-little-boy\/\">described Toole<\/a> as a \u201cserial predator who roamed this country for years and grabbed kids all over this country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Walsh told The Post: \u201cIt sounds logical [that Toole could have kidnapped Garcia]. He was in the area. She was the age he liked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Garcia met John Walsh in 2014 and gave him an early cut of her film. His assistant later told her that he quickly turned it off. \u201cI don\u2019t know if it was a trigger for him,\u201d Garcia said. \u201cHe didn\u2019t get through that much of the film and I understand why.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Garcia is now 48 and single, and lives by the Gulf of Mexico in Florida. She is the CEO of Trikaroo, a micro-scooter brand.<\/p>\n<p>She admits that, for a while, she harbored resentment against her family for burying her truth. Her sister \u2014 who was supposed to be watching Garcia when she was nabbed \u2014 left home after the abduction. I don\u2019t blame my sister,\u201d Garcia said. \u201cThe only person to blame is the person that took me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She created The Untold Project, a charity to help survivors of sexual PTSD trauma safely tell their own stories.<\/p>\n<p>When she decided to turn her life experience into a movie, Garcia turned to her friend and mentor, \u201cWonder Woman\u201d director Jenkins, whom Gina \u00a0had met in 2011.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI asked her to direct my movie,\u201d Garcia said. Jenkins responded, \u201cAbsolutely not. You have to tell your story. You need to direct it.\u201d When Garcia argued she wasn\u2019t a director, Jenkins told her: \u201cYou will be when you\u2019re done.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Famed attorney Gloria Allred makes her acting debut in \u201cUntold,\u201d playing a wounded veteran.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI admire her and her persistence,\u201d Allred told The Post of Garcia, whom she met through Terri Ivens, the \u201cAll My Children\u201d actress who plays grown-up Garcia in the film. \u201cSo often children don\u2019t have a voice when they\u2019re sexually abused. There\u2019s a trauma in their life for many years afterwards that they\u2019re trying to understand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s only been since Garcia learned her truth that she can move forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt will be 40 years in October. I can\u2019t stay living in the past,\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019m in a great space, physically and emotionally.
