{"id":335395,"date":"2021-09-06T03:31:08","date_gmt":"2021-09-06T00:31:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/de-blasio-tours-queens-business-ravaged-by-ida-floodwaters\/"},"modified":"2021-09-06T03:31:08","modified_gmt":"2021-09-06T00:31:08","slug":"de-blasio-tours-queens-business-ravaged-by-ida-floodwaters","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/de-blasio-tours-queens-business-ravaged-by-ida-floodwaters\/","title":{"rendered":"#De Blasio tours Queens business ravaged by Ida floodwaters"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#De Blasio tours Queens business ravaged by Ida floodwaters<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n        <\/aside>\n<p>Mayor Bill De Blasio toured a Queens business that was devastated by flooding when the remnants of Hurricane Ida tore through the city last week \u2014 leaving 12 people dead in the raging waters.<\/p>\n<p>De Blasio visited La Adelita of Woodside on Roosevelt Ave. Sunday afternoon, which was ravaged by the deluge causing thousands of dollars in damages to the business, which does not have flood insurance.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Cynthia Iglesias, 30, owns the Mexican eatery with her mother Maria, which opened in 2020.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>She described the horror as she saw her business nearly drown as water began to fill up the restaurant\u2019s basement, where the kitchen is located and was in full operation at the time.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The overflow of water caused the sewage pipes to burst, filling up the kitchen in waste up to the staffs\u2019 knees for two hours.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was wet and trembling,\u201d Iglesias told The Post Saturday.\u00a0\u201cIt was coming from the drains. About $2,5000 worth of food was also destroyed.<\/p>\n<p>The restaurant was forced to close its doors for two days, but has since partially reopened mainly selling pastries. They bought a temporary fryer on credit.<\/p>\n<p>She\u2019s not sure how she and other local businesses without flood insurance will be able to recover.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe same way we all know to wear a mask to prevent COVID, the same way we should know how to react for flooding h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ening,\u201d Iglesias said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs a business, I wasn\u2019t expecting to go through this. It\u2019s atrocious. It looked like a river park.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Iglesias was forced to close her other restaurant Corazon de Mexico in Long Island City due to the COVID-19 pandemic in January.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe already lost one business. Additionally, he said he believes that Iglesias\u2019 landlord should cover the cost of the burst sewer pipes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re working with her on her lease, because from what we can tell the landlord should be fixing those pipes,\u201d the mayor said. \u201cWe don\u2019t know this yet, not trying to excuse anyone, but on a typical lease that would be the landlord\u2019s responsibility to keep those pipes up. So we want to make sure that cost doesn\u2019t fall to her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said he believes the city should be able to provide a $3,000 grant to the restaurant in the next three days.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The bigger issue, the mayor said, is a city-wide effort to raise kitchens and other appliances out of basements or at least off of basement floors as sea levels continue to rise and worsen instances of flooding.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have to figure out a strategy now to support that, encourage that and find some way to help fund it if we can,\u201d he said. \u201cBut I think that the shape of things to come is at least reorienting some things away from basements or getting things higher up in basements.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Iglesias said the local business community has been very supportive of each other in the wake of the storm, reaching out and keeping in touch via <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WhatsApp<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSometimes we cry. Other local politicians including Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez had also visited earlier, Iglesias said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe definitely offered a lot of solutions and things that would avoid this from happening again and certain resources and help that they will be granting us,\u201d she said. \u201cThey\u2019re going to see if we can recuperate at least something from what we lost.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She hopes this should be a lesson for the city and businesses for the next storm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is something that first time happened so I really never thought we\u2019d expect this. Hopefully by the next flooding, not only my business, but the other businesses are more prepared.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>President Biden will tour storm-shattered neighborhoods in Queens Tuesday,\u00a0as well as part of New Jersey.<\/p>\n<p>On Sunday, Gov. Kathy Hochul announced New York suffered at least $50 million in\u00a0damage from Hurricane Ida.<\/p>\n<p>Hochul said\u00a0the price tag\u00a0\u2014 which she expects to grow \u2014 qualifies New Yorkers for major federal disaster assistance, including funding for people displaced during the storm.\n                        <\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
