warning"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#Over 200 medical journals cosign &#8216;catastrophic&#8217; warning<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n        <\/aside>\n<p>More than 200 leading health journals have issued a joint statement \u2014 a \u201ccall for emergency action\u201d by world leaders to protect public health in the face of rising global temperatures and diminishing biodiversity. <\/p>\n<p>Prominent peer-reviewed journals including the BMJ, the Lancet and the New England Journal of Medicine have co-signed the statement, making this the first time so many research publications have issued such a warning on the severity of climate change. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs health professionals, we must do all we can to aid the transition to a sustainable, fairer, resilient, and healthier world,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/374\/bmj.n1734\">they write<\/a>, in an editorial published Monday. \u201cWe, as editors of health journals, call for governments and other leaders to act, marking 2021 as the year that the world finally changes course.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/09\/climate-scientists-06-1.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1024\" alt=\"Greenland\" class=\"wp-image-19363728\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/09\/climate-scientists-06-1.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/09\/climate-scientists-06-1.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/09\/climate-scientists-06-1.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>Arctic countries such as Greenland are on the front line of global warming as rising temperatures give way to rising waters thanks to glacial melt. <\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The authors reiterate that the disastrous conditions we\u2019re seeing in the world today \u2014 extreme temperatures, natural disasters, rapidly declining wildlife and air pollution, to name a few \u2014 are disproportionately affecting the world\u2019s most vulnerable populations, such as children and the elderly, minority communities and the economically disadvantaged.<\/p>\n<p>And it\u2019s only a matter of short time before climate change threatens us all.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIndeed, no temperature rise is \u2018safe,\u2019\u200c\u2009\u201d they caution, adding that heat-related deaths among people aged 65 and up has increased by more than 50% during the past 20 years. \u201cHigher temperatures have brought increased dehydration and renal function loss, dermatological malignancies, tropical infections, adverse mental health outcomes, pregnancy complications, allergies, and cardiovascular and pulmonary morbidity and mortality.\u201d <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/09\/climate-scientists-05.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1024\" alt=\"Wildfire in Evia, Greece\" class=\"wp-image-19363772\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/09\/climate-scientists-05.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/09\/climate-scientists-05.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/09\/climate-scientists-05.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>Forest fires like the one on the island of Evia, Greece, are becoming regular occurrences in areas threatened by drought. <\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">AFP via Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Meanwhile, rapid warming has contributed to a 1.8-5.6% loss in crop yield since 1981, adding to the growing hunger epidemic \u2014 which has been further exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, authors noted. <\/p>\n<p>Already, air pollution produced by cars and power plants was linked to 30,000 American deaths in 2015 \u2014 the same year the Paris Climate Accord was introduced \u2014 and may contribute to declining mental health, according to a recent study.<\/p>\n<p>Said Alan Smyth, joint editor-in-chief of the journal Thorax, <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2021\/09\/210906091017.htm\">in a statement,<\/a> \u201cGlobal warming affects the future of our planet and right now it is affecting the lung health of all of its inhabitants across all ages, from young to old.
