“#Massive Attack Unveil Plan to Reduce Carbon Emissions Across Music Industry<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

Massive Attack have released the findings of their partnership with the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research, proposing a course of action for the \u201curgent and significant reassembly\u201d of the music industry to combat the climate crisis.<\/p>\n

Among the shifts required for \u201crapidly accelerated\u201d progress are the immedia<\/a>te elimination of private jet use, a switch to electric transportation for concerts and festivals, and, by 2025, phasing out diesel generators at festivals. Other suggestions include \u201cplug and play models for venues,\u201d which would reduce the burden of transporting gear, and the standardization of equipment worldwide\u2014all implemented collaboratively to support smaller venues struggling with the improved regulation.<\/p>\n

In addition to tackling their own emissions, venues should switch to \u201cenergy tariffs that directly support renewable energy projects\u201d in order to \u201csupport the overall decarbonisation of the electricity grid,\u201d the report adds. Artists should plot tours with emissions in mind from the outset: \u201cSuper low carbon needs to be baked into every decision,\u201d including \u201crouting, venues, transport modes, set, audio and visual design, staffing, and promotion,\u201d the report notes. Across the industry, carbon offsetting should be a last resort, employed only when further reductions are impossible.<\/p>\n

To meet the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement, the live music sector should aim for zero emissions from buildings and surface travel<\/a> by 2035, and to limit aviation emissions at 80 percent of 2019 levels. In response to the report, Massive Attack have designed six emissions-reduction modules to trial on their 2022 tour. They have also joined forces with the green industrialist Dale Vince and his company Ecotricity, in a partnership that aims to improve the UK energy grid\u2019s renewables capacity, to train event staff to generate and run sustainable operations, and to introduce vegan food options to venues.<\/p>\n

In a press release, Massive Attack\u2019s Robert \u201c3D\u201d del Naja stressed that \u201cwhat matters now is implementation. The major promotors simply must do more\u2014it can\u2019t be left to artists to continually make these public app<\/a>eals.\u201d He goes on to urge government action, noting that, nine weeks on from the UN climate change conference COP26, we remain unprepared for \u201cthe scale of transformation that\u2019s required for the UK economy and society. Fossil fuel companies seem to have no problem at all getting huge subsidies from government, but where is the plan for investment in clean battery technology<\/a>, clean infrastructure, or decarbonized food supply for a live music sector that generates \u00a34.6 billion [$6.36 billion] for the economy every year and employs more than 200,000 dedicated people? It simply doesn\u2019t exist.\u201d<\/p>\n

When the study was announced, del Naja wrote an op-ed for The Guardian<\/em><\/a> on the need for urgent action, adding that the band nearly decided to stop touring altogether. In 2019, Coldplay followed through on not touring around their album Everyday Life<\/em>. In April the same year, del Naja appeared at the Extinction Rebellion climate protest in London for a surprise DJ set.<\/p>\n
