She added, \u201cThe commercialization and commodification of Jean and his art at this point \u2014 it\u2019s really not what Jean was about.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"innerAdHatch\" inserted=\"shortcode\" style=\"margin: 10px 0 11px -10px\">\n<div id=\"contentUnit\u201c300\u201d\" class=\"adUnits\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><script>\n                        if(isMobile){\n                            CMNUNT.load(\"content-b\", { \n                                containerid: \"contentUnit\u201c300\u201d\",\n                                keywords: \"section_post_inarticle\",\n                                lazyLoad: true\n                            });\n                        }\n                    <\/script>The fact that Basquiat\u2019s never-before-seen robin egg blue painting, dubbed <em>Equals Pi<\/em>, was first unveiled in an ad campaign and will now permanently hang on the walls of Tiffany\u2019s flagship store on Fifth Avenue is also rubbing Adler the wrong way.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUnfortunately, the museums came to Jean\u2019s art late, so most of his art is in private hands and people don\u2019t get to see that art except for the shows,\u201d she said. \u201cWhy show it as a prop to an ad? Loan it out to a museum. If he wore it, it\u2019s because he could buy it and fuck it up, it wasn\u2019t because the stitches were fabulous or well-made.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added, \u201cIt\u2019s lost in translation. People won\u2019t see the depth. At this point the only people that could afford a Basquiat are people he was targeting. Like, you\u2019re the oppressor. They buy it out so that it becomes meaningless.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Stephen Torton, who framed hundreds of Basquiat\u2019s paintings and worked as his assistant for many years, believes Tiffany\u2019s wouldn\u2019t have even let Basquiat into their store.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey wouldn\u2019t have let Jean-Michel into a Tiffany\u2019s if he wanted to use the bathroom, or, if he went to buy an engagement ring and pulled a wad of cash out of his pocket,\u201d he stated. \u201cWe couldn\u2019t even get a cab.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"innerAdHatch\" inserted=\"shortcode\" style=\"margin: 10px 0 11px -10px\">\n<div id=\"contentUnit\u201c400\u201d\" class=\"adUnits\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><script>\n                        if(isMobile){\n                            CMNUNT.load(\"content-b\", { \n                                containerid: \"contentUnit\u201c400\u201d\",\n                                keywords: \"section_post_inarticle\",\n                                lazyLoad: true\n                            });\n                        }\n                    <\/script>In an interview with <em><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/wwd.com\/accessories-news\/jewelry\/beyonce-jay-z-tiffany-ad-campaign-1234900967\/?cx_testId=10&amp;cx_testVariant=cx_1&amp;cx_artPos=2#cxrecs_s\">WWD<\/a><\/em>, Tiffany &amp; Co.\u2019s VP Alexandre Arnault suggested Basquiat\u2019s choice of robin egg blue in the artwork was an ode to the luxury brand. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe know he loved New York, and that he loved luxury and he loved jewelry,\u201d he said. \u201cMy guess is that the [blue painting] is not by chance.
