{"id":33603,"date":"2020-07-24T14:59:00","date_gmt":"2020-07-24T11:59:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/historic-carbon-dioxide-decline-could-hold-clues-for-future-climate\/"},"modified":"2020-07-24T14:59:00","modified_gmt":"2020-07-24T11:59:00","slug":"historic-carbon-dioxide-decline-could-hold-clues-for-future-climate","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/historic-carbon-dioxide-decline-could-hold-clues-for-future-climate\/","title":{"rendered":"#Historic carbon dioxide decline could hold clues for future climate"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#Historic carbon dioxide decline could hold clues for future climate<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div data-src=\"https:\/\/scx2.b-cdn.net\/gfx\/news\/2020\/historicco2d.jpg\" data-sub-html=\"Credit: Pixabay\" data-thumb=\"https:\/\/scx1.b-cdn.net\/csz\/news\/tmb\/2020\/historicco2d.jpg\">\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Historic CO2 decline could hold clues for future climate\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/scx1.b-cdn.net\/csz\/news\/800\/2020\/historicco2d.jpg\" title=\"Credit: Pixabay\" width=\"800\"><\/img><figcaption>\n                Credit: Pixabay<br \/>\n            <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>A new study led by researchers at The Australian National University (ANU) provides a clearer snapshot of conditions during the last ice age\u2014when global ice sheets were at their peak\u2014and could even lead to better models for future climate projections.<\/p>\n<section>\n      <\/section>\n<p>The study demonstrates a new way of recreating ocean conditions in the Atlantic during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM)\u2014around 20,000 years ago.<\/p>\n<p>Lead author Dr. Jimin Yu says scientists have been trying to reconstruct ocean circulation for this time period for decades, because of the clues it offers about past CO<sub>2<\/sub> levels and changes in climate.<br \/>\n&#8220;The LGM was a time of much lower CO<sub>2<\/sub> levels, lower global temperature and lower sea levels,&#8221; Dr. Yu said.<br \/>\nThe researchers say old ocean models cannot explain recently published data on the LGM, meaning a change in thinking was needed.<br \/>\nUsing marine sediments to reconstruct deep-water carbonate ion\u2014which traces reflecting seawater acidity\u2014the group generated a first-of-its kind map showing water conditions for the last glacial Atlantic.<br \/>\nThis map reveals a new glacial deep Atlantic circulation model.<br \/>\n&#8220;We found that carbon-rich Pacific Deep Water extended northward up to about 20\u00b0 S in the South Atlantic at three to four kilometers depth during the Last Glacial Maximum,&#8221; Dr. Yu said.<br \/>\n&#8220;This may have contributed critically to the decline in atmospheric CO<sub>2<\/sub>, thereby helping to initiate the glacial maximum.&#8221;<br \/>\nAccording to Dr. Yu, ocean circulation is a key regulator of climate, storing and transporting heat, carbon and nutrients.<br \/>\n&#8220;This study suggests as waters shifted during the LGM, carbon was stored in the deep ocean, lowering atmospheric CO<sub>2<\/sub> levels,&#8221; Dr. Yu said.<br \/>\nThis information could also help improve or test the performance of various climate models.<br \/>\n&#8220;If a model is able to reproduce the data\u2014a method known as hindcasting or backtesting\u2014it might give us confidence in the model&#8217;s ability to map out future climate conditions,&#8221; Dr. Yu said.<br \/>\nThe research has been published in <i>Nature Geo<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/sciencee\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"5\" title=\"Science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">science<\/a><\/i>.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<\/hr>\n<hr>\n<\/hr>\n<div>\n<p><strong>More information:<\/strong><br \/>\n                                                J.
