{"id":336097,"date":"2021-09-08T00:02:26","date_gmt":"2021-09-07T21:02:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/what-you-need-to-know-about-theranos-elizabeth-holmes-trial\/"},"modified":"2021-09-08T00:02:26","modified_gmt":"2021-09-07T21:02:26","slug":"what-you-need-to-know-about-theranos-elizabeth-holmes-trial","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/what-you-need-to-know-about-theranos-elizabeth-holmes-trial\/","title":{"rendered":"#What you need to know about Theranos, Elizabeth Holmes&#8217; trial"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#What you need to know about Theranos, Elizabeth Holmes&#8217; trial<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n        <\/aside>\n<p>This could get bloody.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Opening statements are set to be delivered Wednesday in the trial of Elizabeth Holmes, the founder of defunct blood testing company Theranos who prosecutors say became the world\u2019s youngest self-made female billionaire by lying to investors about her company\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The 37-year-old founder is facing two counts of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and 10 counts of wire fraud \u2014 and could be sent to jail for 20 years.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The trial comes after multiple delays due to the coronavirus pandemic and Holmes giving birth to a baby boy in July \u2014 and after a jury selection process that last week saw potential jurors quizzed about whether they knew Holmes from the book \u201cBad Blood\u201d or the HBO documentary \u201cThe Inventor.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, as she waits for trial, Holmes has been living with her partner William \u201cBilly\u201d Evans, a hotel heir, at a home on a 74-acre, $135 million estate outside Palo Alto, CNBC reported Tuesday. <\/p>\n<p>The trial is expected to last for several weeks, with hearings set for Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Attorneys for the founder of Theranos \u2014 which was once valued north of $9 billion \u2014 have told the Northern California judge overseeing the case that the founder herself is \u201chighly likely\u201d to take the stand and defend herself. She later named it Theranos \u2014 a combination of the words \u201ctherapy\u201d and \u201cdiagnosis\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Holmes\u2019 plan was to create creating a machine called an \u201cEdison\u201d that could quickly run dozens of tests for everything from diabetes to cancer based on a pinprick of blood. The convenience and speed of Edison devices, Holmes told potential investors, would disrupt the multibillion-dollar lab testing industry dominated by giants like Quest Diagnostics. That same year, the Securities and Exchange Commission officially charged Holmes with \u201cmassive fraud,\u201d accusing the founder of taking more than $700 million from investors while lying about her company\u2019s technology.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Holmes avoided admitting fault and dodged prison time in a separate settlement with the SEC, but now she is now separately facing the dozen fraud charges from federal prosecutors in Northern California. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>What about Sunny Balwani and abuse allegations?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Another key Theranos figure is Ramesh \u201cSunny\u201d Balwani, who served as president and chief operating officer of the company while also dating Holmes.
