In electronic trading shortly after the Beige Book release, the contract traded at $1,794.90.<\/p>\n<p>Gold prices dropped 1.9% on Tuesday \u2014 the sharpest one-day percentage drop for a most-active contract since Aug. 9, with the move pushing the contract to the lowest settlement since Aug. 26, FactSet data show.<\/p>\n<div data-layout=\"inline\n                \" data-layout-mobile=\"\" class=\"\n          media-object\n          type-InsetPullQuote\n            inline\n    scope-web|mobileapps\n  article__inset\n          article__inset--type-InsetPullQuote\n            article__inset--inline\n  \"><\/p>\n<div class=\"wsj-article-pullquote article__inset__pullquote \">\n<p class=\"pullquote-content article__inset__pullquote__quote\">\n        <span class=\"l-qt article__inset__pullquote__mark--left\">\u201c<\/span><br \/>\n        \u201cGold, like all markets, is trading on a day-to-day basis according to how traders are interpreting the tea leaves for [Federal Reserve] monetary policy.\u201d<br \/>\n        <span class=\"r-qt article__inset__pullquote__mark--right\">\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>        <small><br \/>\n          <span class=\"inset-author article__inset__pullquote__author\">\u2014 Brien Lundin, Gold Newsletter<\/span><br \/>\n        <\/small><\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>       Sharp gains in the dollar, expectations that central banks will taper asset purchases and gold\u2019s \u201cinability to break past $1,840 despite positive news [last week] in the form of lower U.S. August nonfarm payrolls\u201d contributed to gold\u2019s fall below the key $1,800 mark, said Chintan Karnani, director of research at Insignia Consultants.<\/p>\n<p> \u201cThis has resulted in short term traders using every rise to exit the gold investments,\u201d he told MarketWatch.<\/p>\n<p>The dollar continued to strengthen, weighing on gold which is traded in the greenback. The ICE U.S. Dollar Index <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"#phrase-company?ref=COMPANY%7CDXY;onlineSignificance=passing-mention\" class=\"icon none\">DXY<\/a> up 0.2% at 92.65.<\/p>\n<p>Trading for gold has come against the backdrop of concerns about the delta variant of the coronavirus that causes COVID-19, which has supported price moves, and uncertainty about the Fed\u2019s monetary-policy plans, as the labor-market recovery looks uneven. <\/p>\n<p>Bottom line, \u201cthe bullish case for gold is characterized by a very fragile balance between a steady but relatively slow economic recovery (data that is too hot causes hawkish money flows) and still accommodative central bank policy,\u201d Tyler Richey, co-editor at Sevens Report Research, wrote in Wednesday\u2019s newsletter. \u201cSo, anything that contradicts either one of those things will weigh on gold near term.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"cx-membership-tile\"><\/div>\n<p><strong>In One Chart: <\/strong><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/Chatter%20about%20a%20%E2%80%98commodity%20supercycle%E2%80%99%20is%20dying%20down%20%E2%80%94%20here%E2%80%99s%20why%20the%20debate%20isn%E2%80%99t%20over\" class=\"icon none\">Chatter about a \u2018commodity supercycle\u2019 is dying down \u2014 here\u2019s why the debate isn\u2019t over<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, weakness in benchmark bond yields, which can compete for haven flows against the yellow metal, failed to provide much support for gold. The 10-year Treasury<br \/>\n        TMUBMUSD10Y,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.000%\" channel=\"\" class=\"\">1.340%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       was yielding 1.34%, compared with around 1.37% on Tuesday. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cDespite declines on riskier assets,\u00a0gold\u00a0has been unable to benefit from the current short-term \u2018risk-off\u2019 climate,\u201d wrote Pierre Veyret, technical analyst at ActivTrades, in a Wednesday note.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInvestors may want to wait for further signs of any economic slowdown before taking the decision to increase their exposure to safe havens,\u201d the analyst wrote. <\/p>\n<p>In other metals, December silver<br \/>\n        SIZ21,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/210319421\/delayed\" class=\"negative\">-1.22%<\/bg-quote><\/p>\n<p>        SI00,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/210315219\/delayed\" class=\"negative\">-1.22%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       fell 32 cents, or 1.3%, at $24.06 an ounce, following a 1.7% drop on Tuesday. <\/p>\n<p>December copper<br \/>\n        HGZ21,<br \/>\n        <bg-quote field=\"percentchange\" format=\"0,000.00%\" channel=\"\/zigman2\/quotes\/210059552\/delayed\" class=\"negative\">-1.06%<\/bg-quote><br \/>\n       lost 1.1% to $4.23 a pound.
