{"id":336732,"date":"2021-09-09T04:37:19","date_gmt":"2021-09-09T01:37:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/art-collector-says-van-gogh-authenticators-are-wrong\/"},"modified":"2021-09-09T04:37:19","modified_gmt":"2021-09-09T01:37:19","slug":"art-collector-says-van-gogh-authenticators-are-wrong","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/art-collector-says-van-gogh-authenticators-are-wrong\/","title":{"rendered":"#Art collector says van Gogh authenticators are wrong"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#Art collector says van Gogh authenticators are wrong<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n        <\/aside>\n<p>Art collector Stuart Pivar \u2014 who founded the New York Academy of Art with Andy Warhol in 1979 \u2014 is suing the van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam for $300 million dollars after it declined to authenticate a painting <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2021\/05\/20\/stuart-pivar-claims-hes-rediscovered-a-long-lost-van-gogh\/\">he claims is a long lost work<\/a> by the Dutch master. <\/p>\n<p>But the museum has reason to think it\u2019s a faux Van Gogh.<\/p>\n<p>As The Post previously reported, Pivar filed a complaint with the New York County Supreme Court on Tuesday alleging that the museum was negligent because it failed to view the painting in real life, and made its judgement based on pictures. <\/p>\n<p>The painting depicts a scenic view of a wheat field bisected by a railway, titled \u201cAuvers, 1890\u201d and inscribed \u201cVincent.\u201d <\/p>\n<p> \u201cAt no time did the Defendant seek to view the actual Painting or engage the Plaintiff in obtaining scientific or forensic tests of the Painting\u2019s paint surface, canvas or other physical elements,\u201d says the filing, \u201cDefendant rejected the authenticity of the Painting after nothing more than a cursory review of electronic photographs.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>The suit goes on to say, \u201cThe <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/general\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"3\" title=\"General\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">general<\/a> tone and nature of the report. . .\u00a0 demonstrates that the Defendant had determined that the Painting was not authentic prior to examining the submissions.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>The 90-year-old art collector is asking for $300 million, which he believes\u00a0to be the fair market price of a real van Gogh. <\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n    <\/aside>\n<p>Pivar exclusively tells Page Six: \u201cThe museum denies everything because they are unprincipled. They don\u2019t want to accept new things and do not professionally address\u00a0the investigation of a new painting. Instead they have im<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">media<\/a>te\u00a0opinions. It ultimately results in the death of the painting.\u201d He added, \u201cThey did nothing and acted in a way that causes tremendous loss.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Michael Mezzatesta, formerly with the Kimball Museum in Fort Worth and\u00a0director emeritus of Duke University Museum of Art, had taken a look at the piece and believed the work to be the real deal.<\/p>\n<p>The museum though, thinks the pic is a phony. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1002\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/09\/van-Gogh_small-res-2.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1024\" alt=\"Van Gogh painting\" class=\"wp-image-19392300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/09\/van-Gogh_small-res-2.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=2048 2048w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/09\/van-Gogh_small-res-2.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1536 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/09\/van-Gogh_small-res-2.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/09\/van-Gogh_small-res-2.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>The painting depicts a scenic view of a wheat field bisected by a railway, titled \u201cAuvers, 1890\u201d and inscribed \u201cVincent.\u201d<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In its July report done by the museum\u2019s senior researchers, they point out the painting has a stamp of mega 20th century collector Jonas Netter on it. They note that Netter\u2019s collection mainly consisted of paintings by the likes of Modigliani, Soutine, and Utrillo \u2014 but not Van Gogh. <\/p>\n<p>The painting\u00a0also bears swastika stamps, though the reports states, \u201cNetter, although being Jewish and living in Paris during the German Occupation, had sold most of his collection already before the second World War, and what remained in his possession does not seem to have been confiscated by the Nazis.\u201d\u00a0 <\/p>\n<p>The report continues,\u00a0\u201cThe Einsatzstab Reichsleiter Rosenberg, responsible for the looting of Jewish property in occupied Paris, there is no reference to him, nor does he <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ear to have claimed any lost artworks after the war. Furthermore, we lack any information on the whereabouts of the collection between the alleged moment of confiscation by the Nazis and its recent acquisition by the current owner; no information has been provided by the owner where they come from.\u201d <\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n    <\/aside>\n<p>Pivar has not been forthcoming about where he purchased the artwork, but says he got eight other works along with the supposed van Gogh.<\/p>\n<p>The museum also says \u201cthe falsifying of Nazi stamps was already a widely spread activity during the war.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>The report also states that the \u201cVincent\u201d signature was in brown ink, while van Gogh used black ink that faded over time to appear brown. <\/p>\n<p>Pivar agrees with the museum on these issues, telling us \u201cthat not only is the signature and ink on the back probably fake, the collectors label of Jonas Netter is probably also fake in this sense,\u201d as well as the Nazi stamps, telling us the canvas had been re-stretched and conceding that these attributes could have been added by \u201cone of the owners at some point.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Pivar however does not agree with the museum\u2019s other findings. <\/p>\n<p>The report takes issue with the motif, stating that the view seen in the image was unlike any in Auvers and seems to be fictionalized. It snarks, \u201cThe particular viewpoint leads to another problem: it is simply impossible to take up such a high position anywhere near Auvers, except way up in the air with a helicopter.\u201d <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"891\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/09\/van-gogh-3.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=891\" alt=\"Vincent Van Gogh Signature\" class=\"wp-image-19392315\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/09\/van-gogh-3.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1782 1782w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/09\/van-gogh-3.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1336 1336w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/09\/van-gogh-3.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=891 891w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/09\/van-gogh-3.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=445 445w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/09\/van-gogh-3.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 891px) 100vw, 891px\"\/><figcaption>The report also states that the \u201cVincent\u201d signature was in brown ink, while van Gogh used black ink that faded over time to appear brown.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>They also had issue with the burlap material used for the canvas, and the technique of the brushstrokes, comparing the work with other paintings by the artist.<\/p>\n<p>But Pivar is insistent his piece is authentic. \u201cThe comparisons show it does look like van Gogh,\u201d he argues. \u201cIt\u2019s ridiculous,\u201d and he states that the artist did paintings from \u201cjust as high,\u201d a perspective. \u201c[The museum] says this painting is unlike compositions of van Gogh\u00a0which is untrue, he made dozens of them,\u201d Pivar asserts. <\/p>\n<p>A letter sent by the museum\u2019s lawyer to Pivar, seen by Page Six, states \u201cThe VGM conducted its research in accordance with the agreement entered into with you and the General Terms and Conditions applicable thereto\u2026 It is clear that you disagree with this outcome. You want the VGM to reconsider the opinion and you have submitted various arguments why it should. These arguments have been considered by the researchers and their conclusion is that none of them detract from their findings and conclusions.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>The letter points out that \u201cthe District Court in Amsterdam has exclusive jurisdiction to hear any disputes between you and the VGM regarding the research. The same article also provides that Dutch law \u2014 not the laws of the United States \u2014 are applicable thereto.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pivar\u2019s collection includes paintings by Raphael, Rembrandt, Rubens, Velazquez, Goya, and Picasso, among others.
