\n Secretary of State Mike Pompeo delivered one of his most scathing assessments of China on Thursday evening, accusing the Communist government of tyrannizing its people and peddling a \u201ctotalitarian\u201d ideology.<\/p>\n

As the relationship between the two countries continues to fray, Pompeo lashed Chinese authorities for oppressing their people, stealing American intellectual property, hiding the origins of the coronavirus, and detaining minority groups such as the indigenous Uighurs.<\/p>\n

\u201cCommunists almost always lie. The biggest lie that they tell is to think that they speak for 1.4 billion people who are surveiled, oppressed and scared to speak out,\u201d Pompeo said at the Richard Nixon Library in California.<\/p>\n

Nixon was the first president to resume \u201charmonious\u201d relations with China in a 1972 visit to the Communist nation, after an extended period of diplomatic isolation.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor too many decades, our leaders have ignored or downplayed the words of brave Chinese dissidents who have warned us about the nature of the regime we\u2019re facing. We can\u2019t ignore it any longer,\u201d the secretary of state continued.<\/p>\n

\u201cI call on every leader of every nation to start doing what America has done \u2014 to simply insist on reciprocity, to insist on transparency, and accountability from the Chinese Communist Party,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

The backdrop to Pompeo\u2019s speech is an escalating cold war between the US and China that this week saw the arrest of two Chinese diplomats charged with trying to steal COVID-19 vaccine research.<\/p>\n

The State Department ordered China to shutter its Houston consulate, where the pair worked and which Pompeo dubbed a \u201chub of spying,\u201d but Beijing has refused.<\/p>\n

Pompeo said traditional diplomacy had failed to engage the shadowy regime, and directly hit Chinese leader Xi Jinping as a danger to the US people.<\/p>\n

\u201cGeneral<\/a> Secretary Xi is not destined to tyrannize inside and outside China forever unless we allow it,\u201d he told the crowd.<\/p>\n

Pompeo\u2019s merciless speech is the latest salvo from a senior member of the Trump administration, which has become increasingly hawkish on China as the coronavirus pandemic continues to rage and infect millions of Americans.<\/p>\n

The former CIA director railed against China\u2019s \u201cbankrupt, totalitarian ideology,\u201d but at the same time spoke of needing to empower the Chinese people.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe must also engage and empower the Chinese people, a dynamic, freedom-loving people who are completely distinct from the Chinese Communist Party,\u201d he said.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
