Today, w<\/em>e\u00a0<em>hear from The Sopranos creator D<meta charset=\"utf-8\"\/>avid Chase<\/em> <em>and actor Michael Gandolfini about the latter\u2019s performance as young Tony Soprano.<\/em><\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator is-style-wide\"\/>\n<p>Ever since <strong><em>The Sopranos <\/em><\/strong>ended in 2007, fans have felt a Tony-Soprano-shaped void in their hearts. But now, over a decade later, <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">series<\/a> creator <strong>David Chase<\/strong> has teamed up with director Alan Taylor for <strong><em>The Many Saints of Newark<\/em><\/strong>,<em> <\/em>a prequel film to the events seen in the series.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Many Saints of Newark<\/em><strong><em> <\/em><\/strong>takes place between 1967 and 1971 as a young Tony Soprano is brought into a world of organized crime by his uncle Dickie Moltisanti. This is an origin story for Tony as well as an exploration of the mysterious Dickie and his own struggles navigating a life of crime.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"David_Chase_on_Casting_of_Michael_Gandolfini_as_a_Young_Tony_Soprano\"><\/span>David Chase on Casting of Michael Gandolfini as a Young Tony Soprano<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>In the original show, <strong>James Gandolfini<\/strong> played the gangster Tony Soprano to perfection, earning him several awards throughout the show\u2019s tenure. But he sadly passed away in 2013 at the age of 51. When it came to who would play a young Tony, casting Gandolfini\u2019s son was a no-brainer for Chase.<\/p>\n<p>He <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/movies\/movie-features\/david-chase-many-saints-newark-interview-1211288\/\">tells <em>Rolling Stone<\/em><\/a> he knew he wanted <strong>Michael Gandolfini<\/strong> as a young Tony Soprano \u201cright away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chase goes on to explain that it was \u201cmostly because he looks like his father. And moves a little bit like him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As they started working together, Chase saw how the younger Gandolfini captured his father\u2019s essence. He says:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>\u201cIt felt miraculous. And sometimes when things are miraculous or astounding, you start laughing, because it\u2019s so incredible.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The 22-year-old Gandolfini proved himself before the camera even started rolling. Chase recalls a table read where the young actor was recreating Tony\u2019s posture:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>\u201cAnd it wasn\u2019t his scene. He was doing this thing, and I thought, \u2018Holy shit. That\u2019s incredible.\u2019 He is his father\u2019s son.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2 id=\"h-michael-gandolfini-on-making-the-performance-his-own\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Michael_Gandolfini_on_Making_the_Performance_His_Own\"><\/span>Michael Gandolfini on Making the Performance His Own <span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The casting decision may have been a no-brainer for Chase, but Michael Gandolfini <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.empireonline.com\/movies\/news\/michael-gandolfini-playing-tony-soprano-in-many-saints-newark-exclusive\/\">tells <em>Empire<\/em><\/a> it was \u201cprobably the toughest decision I\u2019ve ever had to make.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>He goes on to explain in the interview:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>\u201cYou know, I didn\u2019t want to put pressure on myself to walk out of this feeling like I\u2019d grown in terms of my feelings towards my dad. I just wanted to be the best actor I could be, portraying Tony in the way David wanted, scene by scene. I didn\u2019t think about my grief because\u2026 well, I would have sh*t the bed.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>While Chase speaks of Michael Gandolfini\u2019s ability to imitate his father\u2019s acting style, the young actor did want to make the performance his own, while honoring the \u201cbeautiful sensitivity underneath this aggression\u201d of Tony\u2019s character. He says:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>\u201cThis version of him is the reverse. His curiosity and sensitivity come first. He\u2019s not a gun-wielding gangster. He\u2019s a kid who gets whittled down and pulled in.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Story_of_Dickie_Moltisanti\"><\/span>The Story of Dickie Moltisanti<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>But more than a story about a young Tony Soprano, <em>The Many Saints of Newark <\/em>is about Dickie Moltisanti. Dickie is an extremely influential figure to Tony and the father to Tony\u2019s protege, Christopher Moltisanti. However, despite being referenced throughout the series, he never made an <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>earance through flashbacks. <\/p>\n<p>So for Chase, <em>The Many Saints Of Newark<\/em> is his chance to really explore that character. He tells <em>Rolling Stone<\/em>:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>\u201cI had interest in him as a character, and Christopher\u2019s father, the whole story. That Christopher <em>had<\/em> a father. When Larry [Konner] and I sat down and started to write, we said that we wanted to have it be about a dynamic character. We had to get another Tony. And out of the history of the show came Dickie.
