Mayor Bill de Blasio reached back to his salad days as a young radical to quote the father of communism on Friday.<\/p>\n

During his weekly app<\/a>earance on WNYC radio, de Blasio was asked about a recent report that said his \u201clong-held antipathy toward well-heeled private sector interests\u201d was jeopardizing the city\u2019s economic recovery from the coronavirus crisis.<\/p>\n

In response, de Blasio admitted that \u201cmy focus has not been on the business community and the elites\u201d before adding, \u201cI am tempted to borrow from Karl Marx here.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hizzoner then went to recite from memory a concept expressed in Chapter 1 of the infamous \u201cCommunist Manifesto\u201d written by Marx and comrade Friedrich Engels in 1848.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s a famous quote that the \u2018the state is the executive committee of the bourgeois\u2019 and I use it openly to say, \u2018No,’\u201d de Blasio said.<\/p>\n

\u201cI actually read that as a young person and I said, \u2018That\u2019s not the way it\u2019s supposed to be.’\u201d<\/p>\n

The mayor added: \u201cThe business community matters, we need to work with the business community, we will work with the business community \u2014 but the city government represents the people, represents working people, and mayors should not be too cozy with the business community, governors should not be too cozy with the business community.\u201d<\/p>\n

During his failed presidential bid last year, de Blasio sparked controversy by quoting a rallying cry associated with Guevara, the late Cuban communist revolutionary.<\/p>\n

He later apologized for that remark.<\/p>\n

The mayor\u2019s memorization of the Communist Manifesto is fairly accurate, according to a version posted online at the marxists.org website.<\/p>\n

That translation of the pamphlet, which was originally written in German, says, \u201cThe executive of the modern state is but a committee for managing the common affairs of the whole bourgeoisie.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
