Nobody\u2019s quite sure, but it\u2019s very exciting!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Up front:<\/strong> To put this discovery into perspective, the last time someone discovered a new mechanical facet of black holes was when Stephen Hawking determined they <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/journals.aps.org\/prd\/abstract\/10.1103\/PhysRevD.13.191\">emit thermal radiation<\/a> in 1974.<\/p>\n<p>The Sussex researchers were conducting a study on a <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.einstein-online.info\/en\/explandict\/schwarzschild-black-hole\/\">Schwarzchild black hole<\/a> \u2013 considered the simplest of all black hole types \u2013 when they stumbled across a mathematical outlier.<\/p>\n<p>Per <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/news\/2021-09-black-holes-exert-pressure-environment.html\">a press release<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The serendipitous discovery was made by Professor Xavier Calmet and Folkert Kuipers in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Sussex.<\/p>\n<p>Calmet and Kuipers were perplexed by an extra figure that was presenting in equations that they were running on quantum gravitational corrections to the entropy of a black hole. \u2026 Following further calculations they confirmed their exciting finding that quantum gravity can lead to a pressure in black holes.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Background:<\/strong> Einstein\u2019s theory of relativity doesn\u2019t really cover this. In essence, the Sussex team\u2019s managed to add an extra layer of information to our existing knowledge of black holes.<\/p>\n<p>Between Einstein\u2019s theory of relativity, Hawking\u2018s observations on black hole temperatures, and the new research attempting to define the quantum pressure of black holes, we\u2019re starting to bring the physics of singularities into focus.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Quick take:<\/strong> What we don\u2019t know about black holes could fill an entire universe. It\u2019s long been assumed that nothing, not even light, can escape a singularity. But that assumption may not be able to account for quantum pressure.<\/p>\n<p>Where does quantum pressure come from? How does a black hole \u2013 a bunch of matter condensed into a single, infinitely small point \u2013 manage to exert pressure as well? How intrinsically related to this measurement of pressure is the thermodynamic radiation of a black hole?<\/p>\n<p>What does this mean for multiverse theories involving \u2018white holes\u2018 in an opposite, parallel universe existing as a mirror reflection of our universe\u2019s black holes?
