Learn a skilled trade<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n        <\/aside>\n<p>While most of his friends headed for college after high school, Port Jefferson Station, NY, resident Todd Hentschel Jr. worked nights stocking dairy at the local ShopRite. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI absolutely hated it,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p>But, at 19, he hadn\u2019t decided what he wanted to do next. That is, until he spoke to a friend of his father\u2019s, a man who worked as a heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) contractor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe told me about his union\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>rentice program \u2014 where I could get paid as I learned a trade \u2014 then asked me if I was interested,\u201d said Hentschel. \u201cI told him, \u2018Absolutely.\u2019\u2009\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.uswu.org\/\">United Service Workers Union<\/a> (USWU) program is five years long and requires working five days per week in addition to attending evening classes twice per week. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was [a] solid core,\u201d said Hentschel.<\/p>\n<p>But, it was time well spent. He\u2019s currently working as an HVAC service technician with <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.savmor.net\/\">SavMor Mechanical<\/a> in Ronkonkoma, L.I., where he receives substantial raises (about 20 percent to start), paid retirement, major medical and optical benefits and much more each year. He\u2019s already invested in home ownership.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTell me where you can get all of that and be paid as you learn,\u201d said Brian Keating, director of the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/jatf.uswu.org\/training-center\">USWU\u2019s Joint Apprenticeship Training Center<\/a> in Bohemia, NY.<\/p>\n<p>Hentschel\u2019s choice to work in the trade is the tip of a trend that has accelerated throughout the COVID-19 era. According to experts, there are several forces at work making it attractive. The 34-year-old spent 15 years building a career in the fast-food industry and was led to believe that she was on a management track. \u201cBut in 2020, they let me go,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Tarver then saw a TV commercial for <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tws.edu\/get-started\/distance-jax\/?utm_term=tulsa%20welding%20school&amp;utm_matchtype=e&amp;utm_device=c&amp;utm_campaign1=730786058&amp;utm_adgroup=39826016082&amp;utm_source=google&amp;utm_medium=ppc&amp;utm_campaign=search_distance_jax&amp;utm_network=g&amp;extension=&amp;geo=9003723&amp;gclid=CjwKCAjwhOyJBhA4EiwAEcJdcWvHwRED3rCXhcPMZehPuO7RWf2MSnzPVCFsSsm-gXirwJXdqKs72RoCPWAQAvD_BwE\">Tulsa Welding School<\/a> owned by StrataTech. She took down the information, filled out the application, applied for financial aid and started to learn the trade out of Jacksonville, Fla., not long after.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a struggle,\u201d she said, noting that she had to repeat one course and work part-time to earn spending money, plus she had to pay $21,000 in tuition and fees. But, when she graduated, there was a job offer waiting. In August, Tarver started a job at <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tenneco.com\/\">Tenneco<\/a> in Harrisonburg, Va., where she now welds pipes and hangers. These are good middle-class jobs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There are some basic qualifications for union apprenticeship programs that vary from a high school diploma and basic math skills to the ability to pass physical tests. These offer direct entry into apprenticeships in the skilled trades. While you don\u2019t earn money while you attend, you\u2019re almost guaranteed a paid apprenticeship when you complete the program. \u201cThere\u2019s an agreement between the city and contractors,\u201d said Mallon. \u201cWe aim to train a diversity of people and make those good jobs available to New Yorkers,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.epi.org\/publication\/why-unions-are-good-for-workers-especially-in-a-crisis-like-covid-19-12-policies-that-would-boost-worker-rights-safety-and-wages\/\">a study by the Economic Policy Institute<\/a>, unionized workers earn on average 11.2 percent more in wages than nonunionized workers in the same industry and occupation with similar education and experience. Unionized black workers, for example, are paid 13.7 percent more than their nonunionized peers, while unionized Hispanic workers are paid 20.1 percent more.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, 94 percent of workers covered by a union contract have access to employer-sponsored health benefits, compared with just 68 percent of nonunion workers.
