From reviews to interviews to recap lists, follow along for all things TIFF 2021.&lt;\/em&gt;\n<\/code><\/pre>\n<hr\/>\n<p>When <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/news\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"2\" title=\"News\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news<\/a> first broke that <strong>Denis Villeneuve<\/strong> was making\u00a0<em><strong>Dune<\/strong>, <\/em>I clicked my heels together like an old-timey chimney sweep. A big-budgeted, 21st-century adaptation of Frank Herbert\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dune_(novel)\">seminal sci-fi novel<\/a> was just too good to be true.<\/p>\n<p>The idea of a good-faith Hollywood attempt to make <em>Dune<\/em>\u2018s whacky story digestible to average cinemagoers tickled me something fierce. While the difficulty of adapting the book is its own can of sandworms, less discussed is the problem that the world of\u00a0<em>Dune\u00a0<\/em>is absolutely full of invented terms that haven\u2019t quite breached the public consciousness.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Spice_Gom_jabbar_Bene_Gesserit\"><\/span>Spice? Gom jabbar? Bene Gesserit?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>People who haven\u2019t seen a frame of\u00a0<em>Star Wars\u00a0<\/em>vaguely understand what \u201cthe Force\u201d is. People who have never seen an episode of <em>Star Trek\u00a0<\/em>can probably recognize the phrase \u201cbeam me up\u201d or \u201cset phasers to stun.\u201d <em>Dune <\/em>and its glossary of terms are far more esoteric.<\/p>\n<p><em>Maybe\u00a0<\/em>you\u2019ve heard the phrase \u201cthe spice must flow,\u201d and <em>maybe\u00a0<\/em>you know that worms and sand figure into the story, somehow. But my guess is that most viewers entering the world of <em>Dune\u00a0<\/em>via Villeneuve\u2019s movie will be flying relatively blind.<\/p>\n<p>So in the interest of providing a helping hand to new, eager initiates \u2014 or anyone looking for clarity after seeing the movie \u2014 I\u2019ve assembled a quick and major spoiler-free glossary of essential terms to understand what\u2019s going on in <em>Dune<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>To spice things up (haha), I forced FSR\u2019s own Anna Swanson to lend a hand. Her only familiarity with the <em>Dune\u00a0<\/em>universe is David Lynch\u2019s 1984 film. As you will see from her earnest attempts to define the glossary terms below, that adaptation of <em>Dune<\/em>\u00a0taught her absolutely nothing.<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_FSR_Dune_Glossary\"><\/span>The FSR Dune Glossary<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Arrakis\"><\/span>Arrakis<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Anna\u2019s best guess:<\/strong> My memory tells me that this is either a planet or a mode of transportation. I\u2019m imagining \u201cah-rack-us,\u201d it\u2019s \u201cus,\u201d it\u2019s multiple people. Ergo: a planet. And if it\u2019s a mode of transportation then it\u2019s the \u201cah-rack-<em>bus<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>What it actually is:<\/strong> Arrakis is the desolate, hostile desert planet on which the majority of the story<em>\u00a0<\/em>takes place. It is located at the far edge of the \u201cknown universe\u201d and is the sole source of the valuable resource known as spice melange. \u201cDune\u201d is the planet\u2019s informal name. Arrakis\u2019 largest city, its historical seat of government, is Arrakeen. At the beginning of <em>Dune, <\/em>the Padishah Emperor \u2014 the hereditary ruler of the known universe \u2014 tasks House Atreides with assuming dominion over Arrakis.<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Bene_Gesserit\"><\/span>Bene Gesserit<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Anna\u2019s best guess:<\/strong> It is an armor that you wear. A protective thing. It\u2019s what you put on before you go into battle. It sounds like an item of clothing to me.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What it actually is:<\/strong> The Bene Gesserit are a sisterhood of women whose objective is to steer humanity towards an \u201cenlightened\u201d path. One of the primary ways in which they do this is through a covert breeding program. Members of the Bene Gesserit are able to control their every nerve, muscle, and breath. This mental and physical conditioning is passed down through generations and allows them to achieve seemingly impossible feats. It has earned the Bene Gesserit a reputation of being \u201cwitches\u201d and \u201cweirding women.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"crysknife\"><\/span>crysknife<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Anna\u2019s best guess:<\/strong> This is baby\u2019s first knife. Like they christen you, and then they give you a knife.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What it actually is:<\/strong> A knife with a blade made from the tooth of a sandworm. Crysknives are a sacred weapon of the Fremen and cannot be sheathed until blood is drawn. Unfixed crysknives must be kept close to the human body or else they disintegrate.<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"drum_sand\"><\/span>drum sand<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Anna\u2019s best guess:<\/strong> That is a musical instrument where you bash sand until it makes a sound.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What it actually is:<\/strong> Anna is not far off. Drum sand is a naturally occurring phenomenon where sand emits a drum-like sound when stepped on. The resulting vibrations have the undesirable effect of attracting sandworms.<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Fremen\"><\/span>Fremen<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Anna\u2019s best guess:<\/strong> These are people of some sort of liminal status where they are not quite free. But also not enslaved. Are there enslaved people in <em>Dune<\/em>? I feel like there are always enslaved people in these space <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/watch-movies-tv-seriess\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"8\" title=\"Watch Movies &amp; TV Series\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">movies<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What it actually is:<\/strong> Freman are the group of human beings who took up residence on Arrakis long, long ago. They now consider themselves indigenous to the planet. They are extremely skilled fighters and survivalists. And water conservation permeates every facet of their culture. The Fremen are recognized by their entirely blue eyes, a consequence of their constant consumption of spice.<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<h3><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-367711\" src=\"https:\/\/filmschoolrejects.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Dune_2_Gom_Jabbar.jpeg\" alt=\"Dune Gom Jabbar\" width=\"800\" height=\"451\" srcset=\"https:\/\/filmschoolrejects.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Dune_2_Gom_Jabbar.jpeg 800w, https:\/\/filmschoolrejects.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/Dune_2_Gom_Jabbar-768x433.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\"\/><\/h3>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"gom_jabbar\"><\/span>gom jabbar<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Anna\u2019s best guess:<\/strong> I think this is a really big sword. It\u2019s some sort of weapon. It sounds like a very important weapon. Like is it <em>Dune<\/em>\u2018s Excalibur?<\/p>\n<p><strong>What it actually is:<\/strong> The gom jabbar is a poison-tipped needle used by the Bene Gesserit in the \u201cGom Jabbar Test of Humanity,\u201d a means of determining if a subject\u2019s awareness is stronger than their instincts. If a subject is conscious of the deadly presence of the gom jabbar, which is held to their neck during the test, they will be able to resist the animal instinct to withdraw their hand from a painful device.<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Kwisatz_Haderach\"><\/span>Kwisatz Haderach<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Anna\u2019s best guess:<\/strong> This is a union of two forces. Like there is the Kwisatz and the Haderach. And they were enemies that are now together. Like a merger. It\u2019s Waystar Royco.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What it actually is:<\/strong> Meaning \u201c<em>shortening of the way<\/em>\u201d and \u201c<em>one who can be many places at once<\/em>,\u201d the term originates from the Bene Gesserit and describes the end-goal of the sisterhood\u2019s breeding program: a male capable of accessing a region of prescient and genetic knowledge unattainable to women. The Kwisatz Haderach would be the amalgam of various figures all at once (\u201cReverend Mother,\u201d \u201cMentat,\u201d and \u201cGuild navigator\u201d).<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"MaudDib\"><\/span>Maud\u2019Dib<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Anna\u2019s best guess:<\/strong> The Maud\u2019Dib is a group of people. And they are somehow connected to the worm because the worm lives <em>\u2018Dib\u00a0<\/em>under the sand.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What it actually is:<\/strong> Maud\u2019Dib is a rich term with multiple, intersecting meanings. Maud\u2019Dib is the Fremen name for the desert mouse native to Arrakis. It is also the name of one of Arrakis\u2019 twin moons. While the larger meaning of Maud\u2019Dib is not fully revealed in the new <em>Dune <\/em>movie (a.k.a. <em>Dune: Part One<\/em>), hints at its greater purpose make it worth highlighting in this glossary. Maud\u2019Dib is not to be confused (or is it?) with Mahdi, the name used by the Fremen to describe their messiah.<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Salusa_Secundus\"><\/span>Salusa Secundus<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Anna\u2019s best guess:<\/strong> That is the second Salusas.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What it actually is:<\/strong> Salusa Secundus is an imperial prison planet that makes the physical conditions on Arrakis look like Disneyland. These harsh conditions serve as the training ground of the Sardaukar, an elite military force of the Padishah Emperor.<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"shai-hulud\"><\/span>shai-hulud<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Anna\u2019s best guess:<\/strong> I think that this is a word for someone who is young and\u00a0<em>shy<\/em>.\u00a0A shy hero.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What it actually is<\/strong>: Shai-hulud is the reverential, awe-filled Fremen term for the sandworm of Arrakis. While the sandworms are themselves a species, shai-hulud is more than a de<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">script<\/a>ion for a physical entity (or entities). Rather, it alludes to the Fremen belief that \u201cthe sandworm\u201d (as a concept) is the physical embodiment of powerful divinity.<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"sietch\"><\/span>sietch<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Anna\u2019s best guess:<\/strong> Like if you live in Rochester, New York, and you want to know what the \u201c<em>sitch<\/em>\u201d is. Either that or it\u2019s a dune buggy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What it actually is:<\/strong> Sietch is a Fremen term for a community or settlement. Typically located within the planet\u2019s desolate mountains and rocky outcrops, sietches are primarily located underground. In <em>Dune<\/em>, the major Fremen sietch is \u201cSietch Tabr,\u201d home to the characters Stilgar and Chani.<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"spice\"><\/span>spice<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Anna\u2019s best guess:<\/strong> Spice is the thing that the planet has as a natural resource. And it\u2019s really valuable. It also might have magical properties. And people want it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What it actually is:<\/strong> Also known as melange, spice is a powerful drug found on Arrakis. The most valued commodity in the known universe, spice grants powerful abilities, including pre<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/sciencee\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"5\" title=\"Science\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">science<\/a> and elongated lifespans. It also allows the mutated, mentally-conditioned Guild navigators to safely navigate interstellar and galactic space without the aid of computers (there are no \u201cthinking machines\u201d in the world of <em>Dune<\/em>). The constant consumption of spice is what gives the Fremen their characteristic blue eyes, known as the \u201ceyes of the ibad.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"stillsuit\"><\/span>stillsuit<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Anna\u2019s best guess:<\/strong> I think this is something that you put on and it makes you either disguised or invisible. I also think this could probably be some sort of armor. It contains the word suit so this has to be something that you wear.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What it actually is:<\/strong> A full-body suit worn in the open desert of Arrakis that preserves and recycles perspired moisture from its wearer\u2019s body. The suit is designed to absorb liquids like sweat and urine and filter them into \u201ccatchpockets\u201d to make the reclaimed water drinkable for its wearer. Stillsuits allow humans to survive in the desert for weeks.
