Rather, it reflects changing notions about who \u2014 and what \u2014 is cool and A-list. <\/p>\n<p>Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet, Billie Eilish, Amanda Gorman and Naomi Osaka\u00a0are serving as hosts and co-chairs, while honorary co-chairs include Tom Ford, Instagram head Adam Mosseri and, of course, Anna Wintour. Eilish, like previous hosts Taylor Swift and Rihanna, is a pop star, but she\u2019s more known for sporting baggy T-shirts and a rainbow of hair colors than sexy red-carpet looks. Gorman is a Prada-loving style star on the side, but her main gig is that of a serious poet. (Part 2 will debut next May.) Yet, that conversation has, for the most part, ignored the avant-garde (the radical deconstruction of <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vogue.com\/article\/its-been-20-years-since-miguel-adrover-disrupted-nyfw-8-ways-that-he-was-ahead-of-his-time\">Miguel Adrover<\/a>), the subcultural (Stephen Sprouse\u2019s graffitied club-kid clothes) or anything made and worn by nonwhite Americans (zoot suits, streetwear, the brash logo-riddled jackets by Harlem tailor D<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>er Dan).<\/p>\n<p>The exhibit, Bolton said, \u201cpresents a revised vocabulary of American fashion based on its expressive [rather than formal] qualities.\u201d These include such concepts as \u201cnostalgia,\u201d \u201cpreciousness,\u201d \u201coptimism\u201d and \u201cexuberance.\u201d And, while the show includes Ralph Lauren and Donna Karan, about 70% of the 100 garments on display will come from \u201cnew,\u201d \u201cyoung\u201d labels \u2014 such as the genderless streetwear brand Telfar and the funky sustainable line Collina Strada. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"682\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/09\/ReginaKing.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=682\" alt=\"Regina King in Christopher John Rogers at the 2021 Costume Design Awards.\" class=\"wp-image-19441961\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/09\/ReginaKing.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1023 1023w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/09\/ReginaKing.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=682 682w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/09\/ReginaKing.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=341 341w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/09\/ReginaKing.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 682px) 100vw, 682px\"\/><figcaption>Regina King in Christopher John Rogers at the 2021 Costume Design Awards.<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">Instagram<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Many of the artists featured are immigrants (futurist Rudi Gernreich, \u201coptimism\u201d), or not white (Asian American Anna Sui, \u201cpreciousness\u201d), or unabashedly queer (Christopher John Rogers, whose big Technicolor dresses exude \u201cexuberance\u201d). That exhibit shone a light on pioneering women designers like Claire McCardell and Bonnie Cashin, who created practical, sporty styles \u2014 think gingham dresses with pockets and mix-and-match cotton separates \u2014 that rebuked the haughty sophistication coming out of Paris. That kind of unfussy dressing, from the soigne simplicity of Halston\u2019s disco gowns to the preppy polish of Perry Ellis, would come to define American fashion for decades. <\/p>\n<p>But \u201cthis conception largely ignored a lot of very unique style cultures that were coming out of the West [or] minority communities,\u201d said Elizabeth Way, an assistant curator at the Museum at FIT and editor of the new book \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomsbury.com\/us\/black-designers-in-american-fashion-9781350138476\/\">Black Designers in American Fashion<\/a>.\u201d\u00a0\u201cIt didn\u2019t include all the tailors and dressmakers that everyday people would go to to make these really innovative styles.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It also gave short shrift to American designers who created clothes that didn\u2019t fit into the narrow confines of sportswear, such as the late Patrick Kelly \u2014 whose joyful fashions festooned with colorful buttons celebrated African American culture \u2014 or Stephen Burrows, dubbed the \u201cking of sexy cling\u201d for his vibrant knits. For example, Pyer Moss\u2019 Kerby Jean-Raymond \u2014\u00a0whose clothes include shirts and dresses hand-painted with images of black families hanging out \u2014\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/pyermoss\/?hl=en\">took to Instagram<\/a> to document the significance and story behind every look at his July couture show.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople are hungry for that [kind of] narrative,\u201d she said. \u201cPeople who have been on the margins of the mainstream fashion world are proud to see themselves reflected in garments that are being heralded as the cutting edge of fashion or the future of fashion.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That may mean there\u2019s no clean, easy way to define fashion in our country, but that\u2019s the point.
