\n Legal beat: Trump\u2019s Response to City Violence<\/strong><\/p>\n

As violence plagues US cities, President Trump has to decide \u201cwhat is possible, what is imperative\u201d and what is prudent, Andrew C. McCarthy reasons at The Hill. The feds, after all, can only respond to offenses that violate a \u201cfederal criminal law,\u201d such as attacks on federal courthouses, or that \u201cimplicate important federal duties.\u201d Yet if big-city Democratic mayors put \u201cdefeating the president in November over working cooperatively with the federal government to suppress rising crime,\u201d the \u201cmodest number of federal agents\u201d won\u2019t be able to wage \u201ca long-term, intensive campaign against violent street crime.\u201d So Trump should \u201cdeploy federal agencies\u201d to \u201cprotect federal property and officers\u201d first, and after that, the decision to address the crime surge lies with the mayors.<\/p>\n

From the right: The Smart Path Ahead for \u2019Burbs<\/strong><\/p>\n

Team Trump is rolling back an Obama-era Housing and Urban Development rule \u201cthat pressured suburbs to permit\u201d low-income housing, observes Howard Husock at City Journal, though a Joe Biden victory would likely see the rule restored. Yet HUD had \u201cwandered into fraught local terrain.\u201d Liberals \u201caren\u2019t wrong that large-lot suburban zoning is \u2018exclusionary,\u2019 and conservatives aren\u2019t wrong that subsidized housing has failed.\u201d What\u2019s needed is for local zoning boards to permit new development and the adaptation of existing housing, \u201cboth for young adults who grew up in expensive towns and for local teachers, firefighters and police officers.\u201d Doing so would create \u201cracial and socioeconomic diversity.\u201d What\u2019s not needed \u201cis heavy-handedness from Washington.\u201d<\/p>\n

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has \u201cpledged to eliminate Huawei equipment from its 5G networks by 2027 and will ban the purchase of new Huawei gear after December.\u201d Despite Trump\u2019s \u201cintermittent and sometimes wavering support of his government\u2019s position, America\u2019s campaign against Huawei has nonetheless been effective.\u201d The US also had an unlikely assist from the Chinese Communist Party, with its handling of COVID-19 and its \u201cdraconian national-security law\u201d for Hong Kong, a former British colony. While \u201cBeijing sought to persuade the world that Huawei posed no threat, its actions elsewhere were quite threatening.\u201d The United States now \u201chas an opportunity to press its advantage.\u201d<\/p>\n

Media<\/a> watch: 2020 \u2018Tests\u2019 To Avoid<\/strong><\/p>\n

Suggestions that President Trump passed a cognitive test \u2014 recalling five items in order \u2014 only because it was \u201csuper easy\u201d backfired, writes Steve Krakauer at the Fourth Watch news<\/a>letter, posted by Mediaite. When CNN\u2019s Erin Burnett, for example, asked the doctor who created the test, Ziad Nasreddine, to confirm it was a cinch to pass, he did the opposite, noting the average person gets just 3.7 words right. Yet Krakauer urges the media not to make cognitive tests a \u201cmajor\u201d issue in the 2020 election. Attributing Joe Biden\u2019s \u201coffensive\u201d comments to \u201ccognitive decline,\u201d for example, \u201cdiminishes the fact that a lucid presidential candidate\u201d is making them. Besides, \u201cthere\u2019s more than enough\u201d to critique the candidates about \u201cwithout trying to diagnose them with a disorder.\u201d<\/p>\n

Congressman: Anti-Israel Tilt at State Dept.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Even though, under the Trump administration, the \u201cfriendship between the United States and Israel has never been stronger,\u201d career State Department bureaucrats \u201ccontinue to undermine Israel\u2019s standing among the nations,\u201d Rep. Doug Lamborn (R-Colo.) laments at the Washington Examiner. A recent State Department report on Palestinian terrorism, for example, \u201cdeliberately omits entire categories of terrorist attacks\u201d that Palestinians have committed against Israelis and incorrectly suggests Israeli settlers had committed three times as many attacks on Palestinians, a charge app<\/a>arently based on \u201ccherry-picked stats\u201d from left-wing non-governmental organizations and \u201cPalestinian advocacy groups.\u201d The Trump administration cannot allow such \u201cmalfeasance\u201d to \u201cbecome (or to remain) the norm at the State Department.\u201d<\/p>\n
