Today, we\u2019re watching a video essay on why it\u2019s so hard to make CGI skin look realistic.&lt;\/em&gt;\n<\/code><\/pre>\n<hr\/>\n<p>First introduced in the 1970s by Masahiro Mori, then a robotics professor at the Tokyo Institute of <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Technology<\/a>, the\u00a0<strong><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/spectrum.ieee.org\/the-uncanny-valley\">uncanny valley<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>describes the unsettling revulsion produced by characters and robots who strive and fail to attain a convincingly lifelike <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>earance.<\/p>\n<p>You can always tell when something exists in the uncanny valley. But identifying the specifics of <em>what,<\/em> exactly, makes a character feel \u201cwrong\u201d is not always so readily apparent. While eerily wet eyes or <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/movies\/movie-news\/sonic-the-hedgehog-teeth-830842\/\">unexpectedly human teeth<\/a> are dead giveaways, one subtler element in the uncanny valley soup is skin. Ignoring key humanizing details can make digitally rendered skin feel lifeless and plastic. As if some synthetic android was making an unsuccessful attempt to pass rubber off as flesh.<\/p>\n<p>The Scorpion King in <em><strong>The Mummy Returns<\/strong>,\u00a0<\/em>a fully CGI character animated after the likeness of Dwayne \u201cThe Rock\u201d Johnson, is an infamous example of the uncanny valley\u2019s horrific possibilities. One of the contributing factors to the character\u2019s human-but-not-quite appearance is the eery unbelievability of his skin. Set beside the title character of the 2019 film <em><strong>Alita: Battle Angel<\/strong>,\u00a0<\/em>it\u2019s clear that today\u2019s blockbusters have more or less cracked the code on real-looking CGI skin.<\/p>\n<p>The video essay below offers a breakdown of all the micro-considerations that allow modern CGI artists to create convincing renderings of human skin. It covers everything from pore mapping and subsurface light diffusion to accurately accounting for blood flow-led color chances. It offers a brief introduction to how far we\u2019ve come in the last decade or so. And if one is to venture into the uncanny valley, or to celebrate its diminishing presence on the big screen, it is vital to get granular.
