As there\u2019s only a handful of companies big enough to warrant that kind of buzz, the internet\u2019s going wild with speculation. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Will it be Take-Two Interactive, whose catalog includes the 2K sports <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/game\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"7\" title=\"Game\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">game<\/a>s and such notable franchises as <\/span><i>Grand Theft Auto, Civilization, Bioshock, <\/i><span>and <\/span><i>Mafia<\/i><span>?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Perhaps it\u2019ll be Square-Enix, the makers of <\/span><i>Final Fantasy<\/i><span> and <\/span><i>Marvel\u2019s Avengers. <\/i><span>Or maybe it\u2019ll be Warner<i\/><span>Bros<\/span> so Xbox can add the DC roster of superhero games to its holdings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>And, if we\u2019re going to make wild guesses that include the likes of Warner, why not toss Sony into the mix? Anything\u2019s possible.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Better yet, let\u2019s break down the possibilities into three simple categories: pragmatic, curve-ball, and ridiculous.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Pragmatically_speaking\"><\/span><span>Pragmatically speaking<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span>The heavy-hitters on deck are Electronic Arts and Activision\u2013Blizzard. Next up are Take-Two and Ubisoft. Let\u2019s start with these.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>EA and Activision are intriguing, but ultimately a long shot. Microsoft\u2019s got enough money to buy almost any company on the planet (allowing for some legal merger-wrangling and tax maneuvering). But the company being purchased <em>usually<\/em> has to want to sell. And it\u2019s hard to justify giving up the reins to a massively successful company when things are going fine financially. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>I\u2019d rate the likelihood of an EA purchase at about 10% and an Activision purchase at 0.01% \u2013 I\u2019m saying there\u2019s a chance, but it\u2019s a very small one. Both are highly profitable and there\u2019s no reason to believe that\u2019s going to change anytime soon. And, in Activison-Blizzard\u2018s case, there\u2019s nothing but yucky press coverage out there right now as the company finds itself in hot water over a sexual harassment lawsuit from the state of California.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>It\u2019s possible that Activision\u2018s legal problems could be making its board feel shaky and a Microsoft buyout could look tasty to scared billionaires. But there\u2019s almost no conceivable reason MS would buyout the company while it\u2019s smack in the middle of the suit, unless the price was ridiculously low. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>That leaves Take-Two and Ubisoft. We can potentially count Ubisoft out for the exact same reason as Activision\u2013Blizzard as it\u2019s currently embroiled in its own harassment investigations. But <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/1197213\/market-value-of-the-largest-gaming-companies-worldwide\/\">Ubisoft\u2019s worth about 10 times less than Activision-Blizzard<\/a> (Ubi\u2019s cap: about $8B, AB\u2019s cap: about $75B). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Microsoft could could conceivably gobble up Ubisoft for somewhere around what it paid for Bethesda.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Take-Two, on the other hand, would likely cost <em>a lot<\/em> more.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Bethesda\u2018s worth about $3 billion right now and MS paid 7.5 for it. If we extrapolate that for Take-Two, which is worth a bit over $20 billion, we could see it going for as much as $50 billion. That\u2019s not beyond the scope of reality, but it sure is pushing it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>I doubt we\u2019ll see Microsoft double or <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">trip<\/a>le the amount it spent on Bethesda for any company, but stranger things have h<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ened. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Heres_a_few_curve-balls_though\"><\/span><span>Here\u2019s a few curve-balls though<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span>Square-Enix looks like a juicy fruit that\u2019s ripe for the picking. With <\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/dying-light-2-has-been-delayed-until-2022\/#:~:text=Dying%20Light%202%20has%20been%20delayed%20until%20next%20year.,window%20given%20at%20E3%202018.\"><i>Dying Light 2<\/i><\/a><span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/dying-light-2-has-been-delayed-until-2022\/#:~:text=Dying%20Light%202%20has%20been%20delayed%20until%20next%20year.,window%20given%20at%20E3%202018.\"> pushed back<\/a> and who knows what going on with <\/span><i>Final Fantasy XVI<\/i><span>, it\u2019s possible Square-Enix could be looking for some big arms to fold itself into. Sony\u2019s the obvious choice, but Microsoft\u2019s war chest is bigger.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>But you know what feels even more likely? A CD Projekt Red buyout. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Of all the gaming companies worth anywhere near what Bethesda is, CD Projekt is probably the one who needs a giant cash injection most. <\/span><i>CyberPunk 2077<\/i><span> cost the company\u2019s founders <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-12-15\/cd-projekt-founders-lose-1-billion-as-game-bugs-hurt-reputation\">over a billion when it launched broken<\/a>. CD Projekt\u2018s starting to <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gamedeveloper.com\/business\/with-over-303m-in-profit-cd-projekt-boasts-best-ever-year-following-i-cyberpunk-2077-i-\">see some profit from the game now<\/a>, but who knows what the temperature really is in the company\u2019s back offices. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>And then there\u2019s Sega. The former console maker\u2019s struggled to find a foothold in the modern gaming era. This means Microsoft could conceivably pick up the studio for <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/quote\/SGAMY\/\">around $5 billion or so<\/a> \u2013 not quite what it paid for Bethesda, but pretty close. Considering the glut of Sega games currently on Game Pass, this doesn\u2019t seem too far-fetched. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Now_some_ridiculousness\"><\/span><span>Now, some ridiculousness<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span>Let\u2019s just say it okay? Sony. Nintendo. Epic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>No matter what company Microsoft ultimately acquires next, if any, there\u2019ll be accusations\u00a0the Redmond company\u2019s become a monopoly. So why not really go for it and gobble up a direct competitor such as Sony or Nintendo. Or go even bigger: grab the makers of <\/span><i>Fortnite<\/i><span> and the Epic gaming engine. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>All three scenarios are wild, wacky, and just out-there enough to make sense. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><strong>Conspiracy theory number one:<\/strong> Microsoft buys Sony and offloads console-making duties to the Japanese company so it can focus on streaming games. The console wars are officially over in 2028 when the Microsoft PlayStation 6 hits the markets. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><strong>Conspiracy theory number two:<\/strong> Microsoft buys Nintendo, corners the handheld market, and Masterchief becomes an over-powered addition to <\/span><i>Smash Bros<\/i><span>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><strong>Conspiracy theory number three:<\/strong> Microsoft buys Epic\u2026 something, something\u2026 profit? I can\u2019t imagine a scenario where Epic would sell, so this one makes the least sense to me. And it\u2019s beyond the scope of this short article to discuss the industry-shattering ramifications of this deal \u2013 just based on what it would mean for MS to own the engine. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Our_best_guesses\"><\/span><span>Our best guesses<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span>Ubisoft feels like a dark horse and both Sega and CD Projekt Red are tantalizing bets. But the chances are probably better we\u2019ll see a smaller studio get snatched up. It\u2019s getting harder to find popular studios that aren\u2019t already owned by Microsoft or Sony, but that doesn\u2019t mean there aren\u2019t still some whales out there.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Paradox Interactive\u2018s had a bit of a tough time as of late with <\/span><i>Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines 2 <\/i><span>getting <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gamesradar.com\/vampire-the-masquerade-bloodlines-2-delayed-indefinitely\/\">delayed indefinitely<\/a>. The company\u2019s been acquiring smaller studios at a decent clip since 2018, which makes it even more attractive as a purchase. And its <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pcgamer.com\/paradox-interactive-ceo-steps-down-over-differing-views-on-the-companys-strategy\/\">CEO recently stepped down<\/a> over \u201cdiffering views on company strategy.\u201d Add to this the fact that Paradox <\/span><span>is heavily-invested in the Game Pass platform already and it starts to feel like I should prep an article announcing the buyout just in case. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Finally, the one company we haven\u2019t talked about yet, but that would make the most out of <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/old.reddit.com\/r\/GamingLeaksAndRumours\/comments\/ppggii\/youtuber_skullzi_claims_hes_heard_rumors_about_a\/\">Reddit rumors<\/a> that \u201cinternet lawyers\u201d are going to have a field day discussing the potential monopoly, is Valve. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>An acquisition that gave Microsoft control over the Steam platform would certainly shake the industry up. It doesn\u2019t seem likely, but neither did the Bethesda acquisition until it happened. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>What do you think?
