Here\u2019s how to disable or change how AutoPlay works.<\/p>\n<p>First, open Windows Settings by pressing Windws+i on your keyboard. To turn AutoPlay off, flip the switch under \u201cUse AutoPlay for all media and devices\u201d to \u201cOff.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-753324\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/win11_autoplay_off.jpg?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"Flip the switch beside &quot;Use AutoPlay for all media and devices&quot; to &quot;Off.&quot;\" width=\"650\" height=\"236\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>If you don\u2019t mind using AutoPlay but want to change how it handles removable drives and memory cards, locate the \u201cChoose AutoPlay Defaults\u201d section, which contains two drop-down menus.<\/p>\n<p>If you click the menu below \u201cRemovable Drive,\u201d you\u2019ll see the following options (and possibly others, depending on which programs you have installed.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Configure Storage Settings (Settings):<\/strong> This takes you to Storage settings in the Windows Settings app.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Take No Action:<\/strong> This means nothing AutoPlay-related will happen when you connect the drive, but you can still find it under File Explorer as usual.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Open Folder to View Files (File Explorer):<\/strong> This will automatically open the removable drive you just connected in a File Explorer window.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ask Me Every Time:<\/strong> This will pop up a menu that asks you how you want to handle the newly connected drive.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Pick the option that suits you best.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-753323\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/win11_autoplay_removable_drive.jpg?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"Click the drop-down menu below &quot;Removable Drive.&quot;\" width=\"650\" height=\"236\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Just below that, you\u2019ll see the \u201cMemory Card\u201d drop-drop menu. If you click that, you\u2019ll see these options (and possibly others depending on which apps are installed):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Import Photos and Videos (Photos):<\/strong> This will automatically copy and import photos and videos stored on the memory card into your Windows 11 Photos app library.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Import Photos and Videos (OneDrive):<\/strong> This will copy the memory card\u2019s photos and videos onto your OneDrive cloud storage space.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Play (Windows Media Player):<\/strong> This will automatically play media files Windows finds on the memory card in the Windows Media Player app.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Take No Action:<\/strong> AutoPlay will not activate when you insert a memory card.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Open Folder to View Files (File Explorer):<\/strong> This will show the files stored on the memory card in a File Explorer window.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ask Me Every Time:<\/strong> This will ask you how you\u2019d like to handle the memory card every time you insert one.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Pick the option that matches your personal preference.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-753322\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/win11_autoplay_memory_card.jpg?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"Click the drop-down menu below &quot;Memory Card.&quot;\" width=\"650\" height=\"236\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><\/p>\n<p>When you\u2019re done, close Settings, and the next time you insert a memory card or connect a removable drive, AutoPlay will respond how you\u2019ve configured it.
