Each side of this cube-shaped model stretches three-quarters of the distance from <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/the-cosmic-companion\/did-a-massive-asteroid-bring-an-end-to-snowball-earth-63f8bd526ec?source=friends_link&amp;sk=67c5d49d3184bddc60aa02d445027d9d\">Earth<\/a> to the most-distant galaxies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCombining these simulations, we can follow the evolution of dark matter haloes and subhaloes spanning those hosting dwarf galaxies to massive galaxy clusters across an unprecedented volume,\u201d researchers explain in <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/mnras\/article-abstract\/506\/3\/4210\/6307536?redirectedFrom=fulltext\"><em>Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Viewers wishing to zoom in on their house \u2014 or planet \u2014 may be dis<a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>ointed to learn Uchuu is limited in detail to individual galaxies.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to its sheer size and intricate detail, Uchuu is also unique in simulating the Cosmos over 13.8 billion years of time \u2014 from the <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/thecosmiccompanion.net\/largest-explosion-seen-since-big-bang-rocked-distant-cluster-of-galaxies\/\">Big Bang<\/a> to our modern age.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUchuu is like a time machine: we can go forward, backward and stop in time, we can \u2018zoom in\u2019 on a single galaxy or \u2018zoom out\u2019 to visualize a whole cluster, we can see what is really happening at every instant and in every place of the universe from its earliest days to the present, being an essential tool to study the cosmos,\u201d explains <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/news\/2021-09-largest-virtual-universe-free-explore.html\">Julia Ereza<\/a>, a doctoral student at IAA-CSIC experienced in using Uchuu to study the large-scale structure of the universe.<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Geek_Alert\"><\/span>Geek Alert!<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Uchuu was created using the most-powerful supercomputer dedicated to astronomy \u2014 ATERUI II.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"post-image post-mediaBleed aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"The Aterui-2 supercomputer. The entire system has 385 terabytes of memory, 6.5 petabytes of disk space, and runs at a peak performance over three petaflops (three thousand million million floating-point operations per second).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith ATERUI, we could only simulate a fraction of the actual number of stars in a galaxy. In contrast, ATERUI II can calculate the motion for all of the hundreds of billions of stars,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nao.ac.jp\/en\/research\/telescope\/aterui2.html\">NAOJ reports<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Despite this massive computer power, this <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/the-cosmic-companion\/did-jupiter-collide-with-a-massive-planet-47353e4a9e62?source=friends_link&amp;sk=b38b80c83775cf91569cfb9f30d8e57b\">simulation<\/a> still took a year to produce this virtual universe. Completion of the model entailed 20 million supercomputer hours, producing three petabytes of information \u2014 the equivalent of 3,000 laptops with a terabyte of memory each, or nearly nine hundred billion high-resolution pictures taken on a smartphone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRecently, a new type of astronomy called \u2018simulation astronomy\u2019 which uses computers has emerged. Using the computing power of supercomputers, we are now able to numerically solve equations that cannot be solved analytically.
