\n Fordham University is persecuting a student for speech that shouldn\u2019t even be all that controversial. Surely the Jesuits who run the school aren\u2019t afraid of honest debate?<\/p>\n

At issue are two Instagram posts last month from Austin Tong, age 21: one implicitly criticizing anti-police protests and another showing himself holding a rifle to memorialize the Tiananmen Square massacre.<\/p>\n

The first showed a photo of former St. Louis Police Capt. David Dorn, killed by looters as he tried to protect a friend\u2019s pawn store, which Tong captioned \u201cY\u2019all are a bunch of hypocrites.\u201d It was plainly a political statement \u2014 slamming those furious about George Floyd\u2019s murder at police hands but indifferent to Dorn\u2019s killing.<\/p>\n

Also political was his other post, with the caption \u201cDon\u2019t tread on me\u201d for a picture taken with a legal rifle on his own property \u2014 which he says was meant to show the Tiananmen massacre would\u2019ve had \u201cfewer casualties\u201d if the victims had guns.<\/p>\n

Yet Dean of Students Keith Eldredge claimed Tong\u2019s posts made \u201cmembers of the Fordham community\u201d feel threatened. Does it even matter that those feelings were irrational \u2014 or that feelings aren\u2019t supposed to trump reasoned argument?<\/p>\n

The Jesuits should send Dean Eldredge on a long retreat: This nonsense is a gross insult to the order\u2019s founder, St. Ignatius Loyola, and its principles.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
