Most awards acceptance speeches see the recipients thanking their co-workers or their parents or maybe God. However, the team from Last Week Tonight With John Oliver<\/em> made sure to dedicate their win to a very specific (and seemingly random) person at the 2021 Emmys: Adam Driver.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe knows what he did,\u201d said staff writer Chrissy Shackelford as Oliver and the rest of the crew solemnly nodded on stage behind her. And for those who are not regular viewers of the HBO late-night talk and news<\/a> satire show, it may have been confusing as to why the team was talking about the Marriage Story<\/em> star.<\/p>\n

However, those more familiar with the show will know that Driver is part of a running gag that sees Oliver making sexually surreal comments about The Last Jedi<\/em> actor, often without warning. These include masochistic requests such as \u201ccrush my ribcage, you load-bearing behemoth\u201d and \u201csnap off my toes you big unwashed buffalo.\u201d<\/p>\n

Driver himself made a cameo app<\/a>earance during Last Week Tonight<\/em>\u2018s Season 7 finale, where he confronted the host about \u201cthe strange, strange bit that for some reason you\u2019ve pulled me into.\u201d Following the exchange, Oliver promised that the bit was over. \u201cIt\u2019s done,\u201d he said, though judging by Sunday\u2019s Emmys speech, it\u2019s not quite finished yet.<\/p>\n

Speaking about Driver after the ceremony, Oliver explained, \u201cWe noticed him last year; I don\u2019t know if you noticed us noticing him. If he\u2019s mad about it, that\u2019s what we are looking for.\u201d<\/p>\n

At Sunday\u2019s ceremony, the weekly HBO comedy took home the trophies for Outstanding Variety Talk Series<\/a> and Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series. This marks the show\u2019s sixth consecutive win in those two categories.<\/p>\n
