“#’Ordinary Joe’ Creators on the Show’s ‘3-Dimensional Love Triangle’ & What’s Next<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

Fall TV is starting out strong with NBC\u2019s new drama Ordinary Joe<\/em> following James Wolk\u2018s Joe Kimbreau as he explores the three different paths his life could take after college graduation.<\/p>\n

Digging into the concept of \u201cwhat if,\u201d the opening episode packs in plenty of twists and turns, courtesy of creators Russel Friend and Garrett Lerner. Tracking Joe in timelines where he\u2019s a rockstar, nurse, and cop, the series<\/a> weaves an intriguing web of overlapp<\/a>ing characters and conflicts, particularly when it comes to romance and family.<\/p>\n

One thing tying the three worlds together is Joe\u2019s past which includes his father\u2019s death on 9\/11. Despite his lack of onscreen presence, Christopher Kimbreau looms large and that\u2019s no coincidence. \u201cEpisode 2 really focuses on that a lot,\u201d teases Friend. \u201cSince [Joe\u2019s dad died] when he was 14, that\u2019s a part of all three Joes\u2019 lives and it\u2019s his core emotional wound.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s something that is really important to his character and somewhere we explore further,\u201d Friend continues, further teasing, \u201cMaybe we\u2019ll even meet his dad in a flashback.\u201d Bringing the show into the present is the mention of COVID, which doesn\u2019t take up much space in nurse Joe\u2019s story apart from a brief mention by his son.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe don\u2019t want to have a show where everyone\u2019s wearing masks in every scene, but we do want to acknowledge that we\u2019re making a show about the real world and real people,\u201d shares Lerner who also revealed that filming began in March 2020 \u201cjust before the NBA shut down and Tom Hanks had COVID and then the whole world went crazy.\u201d<\/p>\n

This meant that the show\u2019s production went on a months-long hiatus. Thankfully, the showrunners agree that keeping things upbeat is the way to go. \u201cOverall, we want the show to have a real sense of optimism and hope,\u201d reveals Friend, \u201cwhich to us feels like that\u2019s what we all want coming out of this very dark time.\u201d<\/p>\n

Along with his differing occupations, Joe\u2019s three lives boast very different romantic situations related to his college best friend Jenny (Elizabeth Lail), and Amy (Natalie Martinez), a woman he meets at graduation. In the nurse timeline, he\u2019s married to Jenny and they have a son named after Joe\u2019s father. Meanwhile, in the rockstar timeline, he\u2019s married to Amy.<\/p>\n

In the cop timeline, he starts off single, but after a chance encounter with Amy, it becomes apparent that the two will explore a romance. The catch? Jenny was pregnant on graduation day, meaning Joe has a son in all three timelines, he just isn\u2019t aware of it in two.<\/p>\n

Jenny tells rockstar Joe at a college reunion that she gave their son up for adoption, which shocks him as he and Amy have been struggling to start a family. As for cop Joe, he comes face-to-face with his son at the same college reunion party, but Jenny doesn\u2019t clue him in on their connection. In other words, there\u2019s a lot of complicated storytelling going on. \u201cIt definitely inspires active viewing, which is something we like,\u201d confirms Lerner.<\/p>\n

And considering the overlapping details in all three paths, there\u2019s something interesting about the fact that he hasn\u2019t fallen in love yet in the cop timeline. When asked about whether viewers should show preference towards Amy considering the show is setting up her and Joe\u2019s love story in that third timeline, Lerner teases, \u201cI think we have to wait and see how it goes. Classically, as storytellers, when you put together a love triangle, you\u2019re hoping that your audience is [divided]. Our concept is so unique and it\u2019s like a three-dimensional love triangle.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re trying to say no world is better than the other,\u201d Friend jumps in. \u201cWe want to say the same thing in terms of whoever he\u2019s with, Amy or Jenny. We want to say, basically whatever choices you made, you\u2019re in the right place.\u201d<\/p>\n

While Joe\u2019s love lives will certainly remain an important factor, the reality of his son\u2019s existence in timelines where he didn\u2019t end up marrying Jenny remains a motivating factor as well. \u201cWe\u2019re very aware that child exists in each world and that will be a driving force in all of the stories that we\u2019re telling,\u201d teases Lerner.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe idea of having a child and starting a family is incredibly important to him because of the trauma he suffered when he was a kid,\u201d explains Friend. \u201cSo for him, this is a central focal point.\u201d Don\u2019t miss Joe\u2019s journeys as Ordinary Joe<\/em>\u2018s three timelines unfold this season, stay tuned for more twists and turns by tuning into NBC.<\/p>\n
