So what does this mean, and what are the benefits and drawbacks of filming in this format?<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_Is_ProRes\"><\/span>What Is ProRes?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>ProRes is a video codec, like H.264 and H.265 that are used by the majority of smartphones and digital cameras. The format first emerged way back in 2007 and has since made it into many professional workflows.<\/p>\n<p>Unlike the H.265 (HEVC) codec Apple currently uses to capture video, ProRes allows you to capture higher video quality at the cost of storage space. It\u2019s a stop-gap between uncompressed video (which is prohibitively large) and modern codecs used by services like <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/social-mediaa\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"1\" title=\"Social Media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">YouTube<\/a> and Netflix which are designed to preserve as much bandwidth (or space) as possible.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-755566 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/iphone_prores_edit.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"Editing ProRes video on iPhone 13 Pro\" width=\"650\" height=\"353\" data-credittext=\"Apple\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span class=\"imagecredit\">Apple<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>ProRes retains more detail in a video file, particularly when it comes to color information. This provides greater freedom when it comes to editing and grading your video. It allows you to trade storage space for higher quality video compared with using H.265 or similar.<\/p>\n<p>Apple designed the ProRes format with speed in mind, with the format aiming for fast encoding but also fast decoding when you get the footage into a video editor. Apple\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.apple.com\/final-cut-pro\/docs\/Apple_ProRes_White_Paper.pdf\">January 2020 ProRes whitepaper<\/a> states that:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>The\u00a0ProRes family of codecs is designed for speed \u2026\u00a0ProRes decoders are designed to work especially well as high-quality, high-performance editing codecs for Final Cut Pro X. Not only are they fast for decoding video at full frame size and quality, but they are even faster at decoding frames at \u201chalf-size\u201d frame (1\/2 height and 1\/2 width)<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In addition to higher quality video and faster encoding and decoding, the ProRes format enjoys excellent compatibility with Apple\u2019s professional editing suite Final Cut Pro X, as well as Adobe Premiere and DaVinci Resolve.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"4K_ProRes_on_iPhone_Requires_at_Least_256GB_Storage\"><\/span>4K ProRes on iPhone Requires at Least 256GB Storage<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>If the idea of ProRes on an iPhone excites you, you should be aware that you\u2019ll need an iPhone 13 Pro (or Pro Max) or later with at least 256GB capacity to capture 4K footage at 30 frames per second. While the 128GB iPhone 13 Pro\u00a0<em>can<\/em> capture ProRes, this is limited to 1080p at 30 frames per second.<\/p>\n<p>Apple hasn\u2019t said an awful lot about ProRes on the iPhone beyond the initial announcement on September 14, 2021, but the company has confirmed that the iPhone 13 Pro will be able to edit and export footage, in addition to recording it.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-755567\" src=\"https:\/\/www.howtogeek.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/iphone_13_pro.png?trim=1,1&amp;bg-color=000&amp;pad=1,1\" alt=\"iPhone 13 Pro\" width=\"650\" height=\"343\" onload=\"pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\" onerror=\"this.onerror=null;pagespeed.lazyLoadImages.loadIfVisibleAndMaybeBeacon(this);\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span class=\"imagecredit\">Apple<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>As previously stated, the iPhone 13 Pro won\u2019t ship with ProRes support when it launches on September 24, 2021. The feature will be added via an iOS update at a later date, with Apple merely hinting that ProRes support is \u201cComing Soon\u201d.<\/p>\n<h2 role=\"heading\" aria-level=\"2\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"For_Creatives_and_Professionals\"><\/span>For Creatives and Professionals<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>While ProRes support is nice to have, the sheer file size makes it an unsuitable format for most users who use their iPhones for capturing day-to-day video.
