They\u2019re\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/urbanairport.com\/uap-blog\/uap-hyundai-plans-to-develop-65-electric-urban-airports-worldwide\">developing the blueprint and foundations<\/a> for a fully operational urban airport (aka vertiport)<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0called Air-One, which is launching in 2022.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/fast.wistia.net\/embed\/iframe\/l8c5ayh3on?videoFoam=true\" title=\"Whats it like to be a startup founder in Barcelona? Video\" allowtransparency=\"true\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" class=\"wistia_embed\" name=\"wistia_embed\" allowfullscreen=\"\" msallowfullscreen=\"\" width=\"100%\" height=\"100%\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Air-One will be the world\u2019s first vertiport to meet the future demand for autonomous drones and electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) passenger vehicles.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Its location is Coventry, UK. The company chose the site as the city is a historic hub for the automobile and aerospace industry, with a pool of people and skills that can support the future R&amp;D and advanced manufacturing industries. The location also provides easy access nationwide, with 90% of the UK population within four hours of <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/trip-and-travel\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"10\" title=\"Trip &amp; Travel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">travel<\/a> time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Urban-Air Port plans to plug the infrastructure gap with more than 200 electric air mobility hubs worldwide to meet expected global demand in the next five years.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">It\u2019s an ambitious project which highlights the significant infrastructural challenges to resolve before we\u2019ll see eVTOL aircraft available commercially.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Vertiport_infrastructure_is_lagging\"><\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Vertiport infrastructure is lagging<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Unsurprisingly, a lack of infrastructure for eVTOL aircraft is a barrier to the commercial viability of the next big thing in air transport.\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/tnmt.com\/infographics\/advanced-air-mobility-investment-dashboard\/\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Only 3% of air mobility investment<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0so far this year (a mere $150m) is in physical infrastructure.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"So_how_are_we_going_to_depart_and_disembark\"><\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">So, how are we going to depart and disembark?<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">There are two different <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">app<\/a>roaches to vertiports:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">1) Adapting infrastructures such as airports, heliports, and parking garage roofs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">2) Building dedicated spaces such as Air-One.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">In June, Joby Aviation\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/evtol.com\/news\/joby-partners-reef-technology-aerial-rideshare-infrastructure\/\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">announced an agreement with REEF and Neighborhood Property Group<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0(NPG) to allow Joby to access REEF\u2019s existing network of parking garages in key cities, including Los Angeles, Miami, New York, and San Francisco.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The company has a large network of over 4,800 parking garages, covering 70% of North America\u2019s urban population. Last July Lilium\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/lilium.com\/newsroom-detail\/designing-a-scalable-vertiport\">announced<\/a> their idea of vertiports based around modular designs<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> suitable for placing a vertiport at an existing transport terminal, next to a shopping center, on top of a busy car park, or alongside a suburban residential development.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Manufacturers can prefabricate the modules off-site, reducing costs and allowing for rapid on-site construction.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_challenges_of_creating_aircraft_vertiport\"><\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The challenges of creating aircraft vertiport<\/span><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">There is a range of logistical and safety issues. These include:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Numbers:<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> How many aircraft fit into the vertiport approach and take-off area (FATO)? Most companies are aiming for a large fleet that departs with mere minutes between take-offs and landings. This requires a lot of parking bays for aircraft and a place for eVTOL aircraft to recharge.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Safety:<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> How will passengers embark and disembark safely? For example, under <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.faa.gov\/air_traffic\/publications\/atpubs\/atc_html\/chap3_section_11.html\">current FAA regulations<\/a>, helicopters currently need to be 60 meters apart because of downwash and rotor\/engine hazards. This will be an even bigger challenge for large numbers of eVTOL aircraft.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Passenger processing:<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Also tied into safety is passenger processing. Uber Elevate proposes a turnaround time of five minutes in between departing passengers and the next vertiport take-off. It is logistically questionable. Think about the time it takes to get off a plane, get on a bus, and arrive at the terminal, for instance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Security:<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0What type of screening will take place before passengers board?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Battery charging times:<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> Aircraft need somewhere to recharge at the vertiport. Recharging varies per model and could take anything from 20 minutes to one hour. Currently, there\u2019s no interoperability between batteries used by different eVTOL aircraft.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Standardization:\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Different kinds of eVTOLs are in different sizes and configurations. This makes vertiport standardization impossible.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">eVTOLs are coming, but they\u2019ll only be able to take flight with the right infrastructure. Until vertiports are in place, their <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/technology\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"4\" title=\"Technology\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">technology<\/a> is stagnating, and their wings and rotors are clipped.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<p><i>Do EVs excite your electrons?
