Another huge crowd tonight in Portland, including a new “wall” on the front lines: a Wall of Vets.<\/p>\n

\n First, there was a \u201cwall\u201d of moms protecting Portland protesters \u2014 now there\u2019s a wall of vets doing the same.<\/p>\n

A group of military veterans joined protesters in the city for the first time Friday night, standing with their hands clasped behind their backs or holding Black Lives Matter signs, according to a New York Times reporter and others from the scene.<\/p>\n

\u201cDisabled veterans 4 BLM,\u201d one vet\u2019s sign read.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am an American patriot. Federal troops defend property, but this does give them the right to take away my constitutional freedom,\u201d another sign from a veteran read.<\/p>\n

Federal officers have been dispatched to the city since July 4, earning criticism for \u201ckidnapp<\/a>ing\u201d protesters and tear-gassing crowds that have held demonstrations over the police killing of George Floyd for more than 50 days.<\/p>\n

Earlier in the week, federal agents teargassed a crowd that included Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler, who was attending a demonstration.<\/p>\n

Wheeler said the troops were grossly overstepping their authority.<\/p>\n

But President Trump has praised the federal police there for doing a \u201cgreat job\u201d in fighting off what he described as \u201canarchist\u201d arsonists trying to damage the city\u2019s federal courthouse.<\/p>\n

On Thursday Trump mocked the mayor over his tear-gassing.<\/p>\n

\u201c[Wheeler] made a fool out of himself,\u201d Trump said during a Fox News<\/a> interview.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe wanted to be among the people so he went into the crowd and they knocked the hell out of him. That was the end of him. So it was pretty pathetic.\u201d<\/p>\n

Large crowds gathered again Friday night as the officers stood their ground in front of the federal courthouse.<\/p>\n

\u201cWalls\u201d of moms \u2014 and walls of dads \u2014 were also reportedly in attendance.\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
