“#’Sherlock’ Debuted 10 Years Ago \u2014 Will There Be Another Season?<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\n The case of Sherlock<\/em>\u2019s future? Not so elementary, dear Watson.<\/p>\n

The BBC-PBS coproduction celebrates its 10th anniversary on July 25, but there aren\u2019t many clues about when\u2014or even if<\/em>\u2014the show will return for a fifth season.<\/p>\n

Sherlock<\/em> was a critical and commercial hit when it debuted in 2010, with reviewers calling the show \u201cgood, unpretentious fun\u201d and \u201csuperior sleuth TV.\u201d The series<\/a> reimagines Sir Arthur Conan Doyle\u2019s most famous character as a modern-day \u201cconsulting detective\u201d (played by Benedict Cumberbatch), assisted by friend and flatmate Dr. John Watson (Martin Freeman), a Royal Army vet fresh from a tour of duty in Afghanistan.<\/p>\n

The series\u2014created by Doctor Who<\/em> collaborators Steven Moffatt and Mark Gatiss\u2014became the most-watched drama in the U.K. since 2001 when it returned for Season 3 in 2014, and that same season earned Emmys for both Cumberbatch and Freeman.<\/p>\n

To date, four seasons of Sherlock<\/em> have aired\u2014plus one Victorian-theme<\/a>d special\u2014but fans haven\u2019t seen a new episode since 2017\u2019s \u201cThe Final Problem,\u201d which showed Sherlock embracing his emotional side, Watson processing his wife\u2019s death and both men rebuilding their home base on Baker Street.<\/p>\n

At the time, Moffat teased the possibility of more installments. \u201cRe: Sherlock<\/em>\u2019s future\u2014for those of you asking, it\u2019s definitely the end. Of Chapter One,\u201d he wrote on Facebook<\/a> after the episode aired. \u201cDr Watson is now Doyle\u2019s brave widower and Sherlock Holmes has become the wise and humane version of the main run of the stories \u2026 Whether we ever get to Chapter Two\u2014our boys consciously living the myth and battling wrong-doers\u2014rather depends on our two stars. I\u2019d be slightly surprised if we never made it again.\u201d<\/p>\n

But now it\u2019s three and a half years later\u2014by far the longest hiatus in Sherlock<\/em>\u2019s history\u2014and there\u2019s been no update on continuing the story. \u201cThere are no immediate plans,\u201d Gatiss said in a Radio Times<\/em> interview this past November.<\/p>\n

Of course, it might be difficult to schedule the filming of a fifth season, given Cumberbatch and Freeman\u2019s workloads. When Sherlock<\/em> premiered, Cumberbatch was still an unknown entity in the U.S.\u2014aside, perhaps, from his small parts in the films Atonement<\/em> and The Other Boleyn Girl<\/em>. Freeman, meanwhile, was known for playing the put-upon Tim Canterbury (the equivalent to Jim Halpert) in the British version of The Office<\/em> and the lovestruck porn double John in Love Actually<\/em>.<\/p>\n

In the years since Sherlock<\/em> hit the small screen, however, both actors have become A-listers. Cumberbatch has won raves playing Alan Turing in The Imitation Game<\/a><\/em>, Khan in Star Trek: Into Darkness<\/em> and Dr. Strange in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And Freeman has starred in Fargo<\/em> and Breeders<\/em> on FX and played the titular hero in the Hobbit<\/em> trilogy\u2014which also featured, coincidentally, Cumberbatch as the voice of the dragon Smaug.<\/p>\n

\u201cI honestly don\u2019t know if there will be any more [Sherlock<\/em>],\u201d Gatiss said in February 2017, per The Sun<\/em>. \u201cIt\u2019s incredibly difficult to get Benedict and Martin\u2019s diaries to align.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gatiss and Moffat eventually moved on to another iconic character of 19th-century literature, developing the drama series Dracula<\/em>, which premiered on BBC One and Netflix earlier this year.<\/p>\n

For his part, Freeman isn\u2019t sure whether he\u2019ll step into Watson\u2019s shoes again. \u201cThey\u2019re few and far between, the discussions about Sherlock<\/em>, just because Mark and Steven, the writers, and Benedict and I, are all lucky enough to be not only working on stuff that we like and are interested in,\u201d he told Collider<\/em> in August 2019. \u201cIf it\u2019s something really special, and if it\u2019s something really meaty and interesting, then I think we\u2019d all be open to that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Case not so closed, eh? Perhaps fans of Sherlock, <\/em>now streaming on Netflix, shouldn\u2019t keep their hopes up. Then again, the detective has been presumed dead before\u2026\n <\/div>\n
