\n Mike Francesa won\u2019t be \u201cback afta this.\u201d<\/p>\n

The New York sports radio legend signed off from his daily WFAN show for the final time Friday, a day after announcing that he would be stepping away from the half-hour program. It marked his second retirement from the station in three years.<\/p>\n

Francesa\u2019s final show was filled with reactions to the Mets Opening Day win over the Braves and goodbyes from long-time callers like Ira Leiberfarb \u2014 better known as \u201cIra from Staten Island\u201d \u2014 who bemoaned not being able to talk with Francesa over the Jets winning a Super Bowl. There was also \u201cSal in Sayville,\u201d a 43-year-old in his Long Island patrol car who said he had been listening to Francesa since he was 14.<\/p>\n

\u201cI thank all of you \u2013 hey, it\u2019s about the audience, and without you listening, being there day after day, I would\u2019ve never had the run that I\u2019ve had,\u201d the 66-year-old Francesa said. \u201cI\u2019ve had one of the really enduring runs in the history of radio, which I\u2019m very proud of. For 33 years, to have a show as successful as it was, first with Dog [Christopher Russo] for 19 years and by myself afterwards, I thank you for that.\u201d<\/p>\n

Francesa said he made the decision to step away from his program so he could spend more time with his family.<\/p>\n

Insisting that this wouldn\u2019t be the last you\u2019ve heard from him, Francesa said he wasn\u2019t retiring altogether and that he had \u201creceived a couple\u201d offers, but didn\u2019t specify what they were. He added that he has \u201cdabbled\u201d with the idea of writing a book about his career, during which he and Russo set the standard for sports talk radio with \u201cMike and the Mad Dog.\u201d<\/p>\n

The show lasted for two decades until 2008, when Russo left WFAN for Sirius XM Radio with the pair\u2019s relationship having reportedly soured.<\/p>\n

Francesa remained on the air, but to many listeners it was never the same once he and Russo split.<\/p>\n

Francesa first retired in 2017 \u2014 only to return less than five months later on an exclusive $8.99-per-month streaming service that was shut down a year after it started.<\/p>\n

While Francesa\u2019s ratings dipped, clips of his show were immortalized on Twitter<\/a> by the account \u201cBackAftaThis,\u201d a phrase used by Francesa when he would go into a commercial break.<\/p>\n

Francesa had tried to get the account with over 100,000 followers to stop posting the clips, which often showed Francesa in an unflattering light, but ultimately relented.<\/p>\n

\u201cEnjoy this crazy year as best you can,\u201d Francesa said. \u201cAnd until we meet again, be safe. Thank you, goodbye.\u201d\n <\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n
