{"id":342886,"date":"2021-09-22T23:29:10","date_gmt":"2021-09-22T20:29:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/en.buradabiliyorum.com\/charter-schools-gained-over-public-during-pandemic-report\/"},"modified":"2021-09-22T23:29:10","modified_gmt":"2021-09-22T20:29:10","slug":"charter-schools-gained-over-public-during-pandemic-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/charter-schools-gained-over-public-during-pandemic-report\/","title":{"rendered":"#Charter schools gained over public during pandemic: report"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<strong>#Charter schools gained over public during pandemic: report<\/strong>&#8221;<\/p>\n<div>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n        <\/aside>\n<p>Charter schools scooped up hundreds of thousands of additional students across the U.S. during the coronavirus outbreak while enrollment plunged at traditional public schools amid building closures and inferior virtual learning, a new report reveals.<\/p>\n<p>Charter school enrollment increased by 7.1 percent nationally during 2020-\u201921 amid the initial wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the \u201cVoting With Their Feet\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.publiccharters.org\/sites\/default\/files\/documents\/2021-09\/napcs_voting_feet_rd6.pdf\">analysis conducted <\/a>by the National Alliance for Public Charter Schools. Enrollment at charter schools jumped from 3,350,785 students in 2019-2020 to 3,588,094 in 2021 \u2014 or nearly 240,000.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, traditional public school enrollment plunged by 3.3 percent \u2014 a drop of nearly 1.5 million kids \u2014 from 44,025,289 to 42,572,705, the report released Wednesday states.<\/p>\n<p>In New York State, charter school enrollment jumped 7.4 percent while students in traditional public schools dropped by 3.6 percent.<\/p>\n<p>Much of the increase in charter school enrollment occurred in New York City, home to the lion\u2019s share of the publicly-funded, privately managed schools. Enrollment in city charters surged by nearly 10,000 students \u2014 from 128,951 to 138,613, according to the New York City Charter School Center.<\/p>\n<p>In the Big <a href=\"https:\/\/buradabiliyorum.com\/en\/category\/download-scripts-themes-apps\/\" data-internallinksmanager029f6b8e52c=\"9\" title=\"Download Scripts &amp; Themes &amp; Apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">App<\/a>le there are now 272 charter schools that account for 14 percent of all public school students.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time, the city Department of Education reported losing 37,730 students over the same two-year period.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/09\/ManhattanSchool.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1024\" alt=\"Parents take their children to PS\/IS 217 on Roosevelt Island in Manhattan on September 13, 2021.&#10;\" class=\"wp-image-19545677\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/09\/ManhattanSchool.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=1535 1536w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/09\/ManhattanSchool.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all 1024w, https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2021\/09\/ManhattanSchool.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=512 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption>Parents take their children to PS\/IS 217 on Roosevelt Island in Manhattan on September 13, 2021.<br \/>\n<\/figcaption><figcaption><span class=\"credit\">James Messerschmidt<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>While there was planned charter school growth in many states including New York, the report suggests that parents fed up with inferior virtual classes contributed to the public school districts exodus.<\/p>\n<p>School district across the country expanded summer school options for students to address \u201clearning loss\u201d during the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe analysis further confirms that a large segment of the nation\u2019s students changed where they attended school last year, prompted by school closures, job loss and dissatisfaction with remote learning,\u201d the report said.<\/p>\n<p>New York City charter schools continue to grow despite the pandemic and were nimble in adapting to virtual learning during the pandemic, said NYC Charter Center CEO James Merriman.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKids continue to choose charter schools. Charter school enrollment there jumped by 78 percent during the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>Of the 42 states with charter schools, 39 reported increased enrollment while only three didn\u2019t. Many families were dissatisfied with the quality of what was available to their children. And that dissatisfaction led them to learn more about the other educational options available. For many families, charter schools\u2019 nimbleness and flexibility made them the right public school choice,\u201d the pro-charter group analysis said.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignright\">\n    <\/aside>\n<p>The report acknowledges that many parents chose other options besides charters, such as home schooling or sending their children to private schools.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut the unmistakable message is that something wasn\u2019t working for more than one million parents. They voted with their feet and chose options that are a better fit for their children,\u201d said the Alliance president and CEO Nina Rees.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe unusually high rate of charter school growth during the first full year of the pandemic is particularly noteworthy because there were likely not more schools opening than normal, and perhaps fewer due to the pandemic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Not since the 2014-15 school year did the charter school enrollment increase by more than 7 percent, and that was attributed to an increase in the opening of new charter schools.<\/p>\n<p>The report claimed some practices in charters \u2014 such as prioritizing \u201creal-time\u201d learning and regular check-ins students and parents made the alternative schools more appealing.\n                        <\/p><\/div>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">If you liked the article, do not forget to share it with your friends.
