Their announcement was made as part of Climate Week and hinges on whether major green energy infrastructure projects are approved.<\/p>\n<p>The projects include plans for two transmission lines that would reduce fossil fuel reliance by providing the city with wind, solar and hydrogen power from upstate New York and Canada.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a transformative moment for New York City\u2019s fight against climate change,\u201d de Blasio said, adding that in addition to supplying the boroughs with greener forms of energy, the lines will \u201ccreate thousands of good union jobs, improve the resilience and reliability of our power supply, and dramatically reduce our reliance on oil and gas electricity that dirties the air in our neighborhoods and endangers our planet.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In advocating for the plan, Hochul talked of the policies being significantly more reactive than proactive, as much pollution-related damage has already impacted health in many NYC neighborhoods.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNew York\u2019s communities are repeatedly facing serious consequences as a result of the devastation caused by the global climate crisis, and the stakes have never been higher as we deal with the economic and environmental destruction these extreme weather events leave behind,\u201d Hochul said.
