“#FDNY official defends excluding famed 9\/11 firefighter from procession for being white<\/strong>”<\/p>\n

\n A top FDNY official says it\u2019s \u201cmost definitely\u201d acceptable to exclude a white firefighter from a ceremonial unit based solely on his skin color, The Post has learned.<\/p>\n

Cecilia Loving, the department\u2019s chief diversity and inclusion officer, is defending a decision to kick Lt. Daniel McWilliams \u2014 one of three firefighters in the iconic 9\/11 Ground Zero flag-raising photo \u2014 off a color-guard procession so it would be all-black.<\/p>\n

Loving testified at a state Divsion of Human Rights trial on McWilliam\u2019s complaint that he was the victim of racial bias.<\/p>\n

When McWilliams showed up at a 2017 memorial mass to honor deceased members of the Vulcan Society, a fraternal group of black FDNY firefighters, he was barred from holding a flag in the color guard.<\/p>\n

Regina Wilson, then Vulcan Society president, asked McWilliams to \u201chelp in a different capacity\u201d because he is not black.<\/p>\n

Loving, who is black, testified there is nothing wrong with that.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo, a request for an all-black color guard is not discriminatory?\u201d McWilliam\u2019s lawyer, Keith Sullivan, asked in the trial.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, it isn\u2019t,\u201d Loving replied.<\/p>\n

Asked if it\u2019s acceptable to request an all-black color guard, she said, \u201cMost definitely.\u201d<\/p>\n

Loving said it\u2019s okay to replace a white member with an African-American to \u201cuplift our identities and our separate ethnicities in order to instill a sense of pride and community and support for one another.\u201d<\/p>\n

In a written brief, Sullivan called the rejection of McWilliams \u201cdeplorable,\u201d and evidence of a stark double standard in the FDNY.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you\u2019re black and you discriminate against a white person in the workplace, you get a slap on the wrist at best,\u201d he wrote. A white person who discriminates gets \u201cheavy-handed discipline and punishment.\u201d<\/p>\n

Wilson received \u201cone hour of counseling\u201d as discipline for her treatment of McWilliams.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe FDNY has created a policy and procedure for bending over backwards, coming up with excuses and accommodating members of the Vulcan Society \u2026 who commit racist acts, and it has to stop,\u201d Sullivan wrote.<\/p>\n

McWilliams declined to comment, but he was upset and \u201cembarrassed\u201d by the incident, Sullivan said.<\/p>\n

After filing his complaint, McWilliams was the target of retaliation and intimidation by Wilson\u2019s supporters, Sullivan argues. One put his hands on McWilliams,\u00a0 and said, \u201dI\u2019ve heard about you, they told me you\u2019d act this way, and now you know me.\u201d<\/p>\n

The FDNY declined to comment because a final decision is pending.\n <\/p><\/div>\n
